My next-door neighbour has a new Windows 8 PC and a printer that is non-wired. This may sound a strange question, but can he join a Homegroup in order to make it wireless (bearing in mind he only has one Windows 8 PC?

What would be the point of creating a Homegroup with only one computer? Actually, I believe Windows might not even let you create a Homegroup if no other computers are detected on a network.

In an environment with more than one computer, creating a Homegroup will facilitate sharing files and a printer. But, again, with only one computer, creating a Homegroup is pointless. Just setup the wireless printer, in accordance with instructions provided by the printer manufacturer.

And, of course, the computer must have wireless capability. You did not say whether the computer is a laptop or a desktop system. If it's a desktop, then installing a wireless adapter will be necessary unless one is already installed.

What is "it"? A non-wired printer already is wireless. Do you mean the computer? If so then I agree, get a wireless adapter for the PC.
You can have a homegroup of one computer, but I don't see the point either.

But you don't need a homegroup to share a "networked" printer over a network.

That said, you may be getting yourself into some unwanted legal issues if the intent is so you can share his printer. Especially if the intent is so you can share his Internet connection - as that would be considered "theft of services"!

Is he using a router? If so, his best bet is to hang (with Ethernet or wireless) both the printer and his PC off the router. Not only will this allow him to share the printer with other devices on "his" network, but a router offers a HUGE layer of security.

Plus, and most importantly, IMO, he does not need to open up sharing on any computer. If no router, I recommend he get one. In fact, I recommend everyone use a router, regardless the number of connected devices.
