    G'day All,

Just wondering if it would be better to buy a higher rated P4 CPU than get a dual core. For example P4 3.0 compared to Core2 Duo 2.13

Given that we do not, at present have a great deal of processes that can utilise the Dual Core, would you not be comparing a 3gig to a 2.13gig processor.

I know that is a fairly simplistic analogy, but I believe it to be fairly accurate.

    What do you think?

a pentium D might not be much of an improvement over a zippy p4 but the core 2 duo beats the crap outta everything else, despite the lower clock speeds. Any core 2 duo chip, even the 1.8ghz or w/e will beat a p4

    Core2 Duo, no contest

Owning a Toshiba Tecra A7 duo-core Laptop, I wonder if I would have been better off buying a single core higher speed processor. Vista OS may make better use of duo-cores than XP Pro does. New software written for Vista may also run better / faster.

This is my actual experience owning a duo-core, not theoretical experience.

PS: Can you wait for Vista?

Yes Bigbazza, born and bred Brisbane boy, although I did spend 5 odd years in Townsville and Cairns in the late 1980's.

Vista.....I hate new windows OS...particularly first releases.

As far as waiting goes, I am buying new systems for our office, and if I don't move fairly quickly, the boss may change his mind :)

I will probably go for the core2 duos as a future proofing exercise.

My main point was that the software is not up to the hardware.
Then I guess that has always been the case, since IBM PC's hit the market in very early 1980's

If you have to economise on new PC's, buy them without OS's installed and buy XP Pro upgrades from Harvey Norman. You will need one genuine M$ OS CD though to install the upgrades. I guess, in theory, you should have one old OS CD for each new PC.
Not sure of that, but you probably have them, anyhow. Bazza
