I’ve got a Gigabyte GA-8SIML mobo with a SIS 650 chipset. Apparently this chipset supports a maximum of 333mhz ddr memory which is what I’ve got but I’ve also read that it unofficially supports 400mhz (pc3200) whatever that means. Does anyone know if an upgrade is possible?

You should list your full system specs, if you need more ram just get the same speed (333). You would only want to go with ddr400 if your cpu and mobo support it and even then if you already have 1 good stick of ddr333 it might not give you that much of a performace increase for everyday normal use. So just adding ram of the same speed might be best.
