Just curious if anyone has had any luck with a site that they can download movies from. How long does it take to download w/broadband?

Uh, did i say free? Anyway, none of the local establishments has ever had the movie i'm looking for. So now since i have broadband i wanted to give this movie download a try and see if i like it. Ebay would take week or so to get the movie, so would other web sites if i ordered it. How long would take to download a 2hr movie? I don't know the speed of my broadband but i can download a song that i buy from itunes in about 3-5sec.

well, there are alot of factors that go into download speeds. I usually download over my wireless at 150KB/s...wired would be faster and I have 4mb cable from Cox. but, i'd bet 40 min to an hour depending on the size of the file.

I have no idea about my kb/sec. I just know by the time i hit the "purchase now" button the song is done downloading. I'm thinking maybe 1hr to download a movie. After its downloaded how do i get it to dvd?

It depends on the type of compression used (which determines file size), as to how long it will take to download.

Most have Digital Rights Management (DRM), meaning there are restrictions on whether or not they can be burnt to DVD, and the number of times played etc.

    Read the fine print.

To test your download speed, there are plenty of free places via Google.

    Example or Example.

Remember, if it's in KiloBits, you need to divide it by 8 to get your download speed in KiloBytes.

Thats cool. I did the test and got 2976 kilobits per second. Is that good or bad?

That's 372 KiloBytes per second. That's pretty good.

well thats like 372 KB/sec, which means if you were dling a movie, it'd take anywhere from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to dl roughly, but it can vary.

Yeah. Based on those numbers you have a 3Mb broadband connection. That should mean around 1Mb per second download. But as Bladesofhalo says it does depend on anything from popularity of the site to time of day.

    I have used MovieLink http://www.movielink.com/ .

They gave away a free rental a while back, and It was very fast. I was on a 5Mbit connection at the time, and if I recall correctly, it only took 10 minutes to download.

The file was in WMV format (to utilize the DRM protection), and would not longer play after the expiration.

    I was overall satisfied.
