    What sites explicate software?

An application may have unannounced side-effects (Windows Defender warns me at every bootop that Bonjour "scans software before it starts" -- why should I be concerned with this?), may be problematic (MS's Silverlight seems to be casuing me no problem but I have heard others complain that it is worthless and problematic), may be difficult or impossible to remove, and may have other negative features.

I hear Silverlight is Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash Player, I have yet to install it but a new version is due out soon. My old Internet Security Suite did not get along well with Windows Defender, but at least Microsoft is making something available that tries to protect our (and their) investment, in addition to the Windows Firewall, an updated web browser, and a few other security features. I never use software that installs extras like Bonjour without a heads up, as I recall it came with the AOL software I used at one time, as did QT and Viewpoint Media Player. It never caused any unwanted side effects I can recall but left me wondering why their software could not make it on its own. After using Comodo Firewall for a time I am now using OnLine Armor from TallEmu w/o complaint. Don't use an AntiVirus on this system as of late, use NoScript with FireFox 3.0.2 or run a Live Linux CD to visit sites I am not sure of.

is Linux your OS -- i inferred from your statement that you use an OS different from Linux and that you use Linux Live CD only for the purpose of surfing through a suspected minefield. is this correct? why use this strategy over an antivirus and antimalware [i use avast and lavasoft's adwatch]? is the Live CD-as-antivirus-and-antimalware strategy effective?

do you expect to switch from Firefox to Chrome? why not IE (i know that many are against IE based exclusively on political ideology. I have never used anything but IE, and with IE integrated into (and non-extricatable from) Vista, I don't what the consequences will be if I attempt to use another browser; but I have seen no deficiency in IE/Windows Defender)

i wanted to send these q.'s to you as a private message because i thought them inappropriate for this subforum, but MG's minimum-50-posts-required-before-allowing-pm's policy disallowed that.

    IE is NOT
    :-D
Due to a European "unbundling succesful courtcase" you are able to unload IE if you want to.

    for lots of links. Bazza
