17-19in are fine; above that they can get outrageously expensive especially if you're going for a gaming LCD with a low response time. try to find one with a response time of 8ms or less.

Its tough to judge a monitor's quality online so my suggestion is to go into some local computer stores (best buy, staples, circuit city, comp usa, etc.) and check them our yourself. Sometimes they have deals there but usually you'll have to try to find them online. you can even check online prices from the in-store computers :D

For a good deal, check out a 19 or 20 inch widescreen LCD from Newegg. If possible, go for a DVI input (if available on your computer) and a response time of 12ms or less, but 8 or under is superb. I believe you can get a widescreen 20" for under $300 now, and maybe a 19" widescreen for under $250. Just check and see: www.newegg.com

I've never seen 18"monitors, but whatever. 17 to 19 is fine, I wouldn't go much higher because you end up paying 1500 for a monitor, then you have to by kick-ass video cards as well, so no point.

I've seen a couple cheap-o 18" LCD monitors before. Don't know why they chose to make it an oddball size...

I run an 19" Samsung, 24" Dell widescreen, and 18" MAG
MAG isn't that great, everything is darker but the other 2 are awesome.
