SketchUp Alters Desktop

SketchUp is definitely an interesting toy. Unfortunately, it has a bad habit of altering my desktop. When using the program an unexplained column sometimes suddenly appears on the right side of the screen. After closing out I find that the column remains as an unwanted new feature of my desktop layout. Furthermore, start has been moved from the lower left to the upper right hand corner, the tray is sometimes heightened, and some icons have been moved as a result of being displaced by the column. System restore has so far worked to correct the mess created. Does anyone have a clue what might be the cause?
