    Hey guys,

Quick question... A friend of mine just had her computer crashed because her son pressed the power bar while downloading or something and it messed up the XP files and couldn't boot. I just installed it as a slave and it is reading fine, so I am trying to do data recovery.

Heres my problem: I can't access the important stuff they want to keep because I am getting 'access is denied' messages because I'm not logged in as their accounts. I am running XP as well, and I'm an adminstrator (this is my personal PC :p) and I can't figure out how to destroy the file protection so I can inspect/copy the files they need.

Does anyone know how to remove the protection on "Documents and Settings" when you plug in a HD as a slave that used to be the master? Do I need to create a duplicate username and password?

    Thanks!

I've always dealt with this situation by booting to a PE CD or a UBCD4Win. These are bootable CD's that load into a Windows XP type interface but it runs entirely from the CD so you can access both drives without any interference and move files around at will. Here's some links....

    http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm = UBCD4Win How-To (requires XP install CD)
I looked around at the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and found the following link. It's not exactly your situation, and it says it applies to Win2000, but give it a look anyhow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272723/en-us
This may be more in line for you http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881/en-us
