I had to put a new hard drive in my computer and have tried to slave the old one to it. When I look at My Computer it does not show the slave, but when i open the Device Manager under the preformance and maintenance section it shows it being there. What do I need to do now the try and access the data from the old drive?

    Thanks

Are there any partitions on the offending hard drive?
    If you are running XP
    start>run> typein
    diskmgmt.msc

This will give you access to a screen to create partitions and format them.

Have you formatted and partitioned the new drive

I thought the drive was formatted and partioned, but apparently it is not. Any suggestions on what to do and not lose the data on the old drive.

If it is in your desktop, make sure jumper is set to slave. Now to set your desktop to see it...right click on My Computer, click Manage, d/click on Disk Management.
Now, Disk 0 should be C:, you should see Disk 1, which should be the slave HDD, right click and import foreign drive or something like that.....assign a drive letter if necessary.
NOTE: It should not need re-formatted.

It is not showing the slave drive on disk management. How can I add it?
I do find it, and when I click it, it says it's in location 1.

Please try and answer the questions this time.

Why did you have to put in a new drive?
    Was the old one broken?

What is your operating system on the new drive and the old drive?

Since you say the drive is shown in device manager I assume that the bios has recognised it. What does the bios say the drive is?

I replaced the hard drive because it would no longer boot up. After trying with a boot disk, and trying a linux program called open suse, I was told there is a change Windows XP was the issue. I bought the new drive and slaved my old one in hopes of recovering data from the old one.

When I open disk manager, it shows it being in location one. However, there is no "Disk 1" location reading. It shows Disk 0 being my new drive, and disk two as drive d: (this is a 3gb drive, probably includes the restore programs).
When I check the properties for the old drive, it shows the location, and says the hard drive itself is "normal".

I just don't know how to access the drive. I assumed (a dangerous thing to do) that installing it as a slave would add it to the drive list.

Once the HDD has been installed, I have instructed you how to get it to be seen by your PC...........................................................your not helping us further.........try screenshots.
Do you have the jumpers setup for a slave correctly?
Can it be seen in My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager?
In Disk MANAGEMENT try refresh & rescan.

A drive is defined as a slave (to itself) by little straps in the back of the drive, where the cable is. You MUST set the strapping of this drive as slave to use it as such. It is a mechanical process, not software. Have you done this?

I have gone to computer management. It shows a three frame window. On the left, I located DISK MANAGEMENT and clicked it. In the top right window, it lists (C:), (E:) (my printer), RECOVERY (D:). In the bottom right, it list Disk 0 and shows it being online with 149 GB. It also lists Disk 2, 3, 4, and 5 and shows them all as removable. They are also listed as (G:) (H:) (I:) :)J) respectively. CD-ROM 0 Dvd (E:) and CD-ROM 1 (F:) complete the lists.

The old hard drive is considered to be in LOCATION 1. I came to this answer by clicking the START menu, then MY COMPUTER. I then right clicked on LOCAL DISK C, and clicked properties. I think clicked on HARDWARE and it brought up a list showing the two drives and mass usb storage devices, and my cd and dvd drives. I highlight to first drive, the new hard drive, and double click it, then click properties. Under the GENERAL section. It shows it in LOCATION 0 (0). I backed out, and then highlighted and double clicked the second drive. I once again clicked properties, and under the section listed as GENERAL, it shows the drive in LOCATION 1 (1) (My cd only drive is also listed with the same location number and will not open now).

Both drives have, or had, Windows XP.

I did move the jumper on the drive to the slave position. To make sure I did it properly, I took the drive with me to the computer store to make sure I got the right type of drive, and the clerk actually showed me how to set the jumper, and we did all the jumper settings on the old drive in the store.

I am sorry this is so detailed and I really and truly appreciate your patience in helping me.
