I'm working on a PC, specs. Win XP Pro, 2.4 256 RDRAM

This thing dogs, so slow to open programs and just very slow on general. The things I have done is Scan for viruses, Defraged ran ad-aware, hijackthis spybot, Deferaged all that crap. Disabled most windows services that were not needed. Under running proceses there is nothing taking up that many resources. There is a lot of programs installed but not running which I don't see why that would make a difference. I also managed the swap file so there is plenty of room there. I don't what other things can I look for ?

    Hi Nicetime
Can you post more specific system specs with some info
    Is this a OEM computer--self build---upgraded machine?

If its upgraded have you made sure the CPU is running at the correct speed

Try a Free-RAM program. Major Geeks has many to download. Some are freeware. I used one on my other computer and it made a difference.

256mb of memory will be your greatest hinderence here... I have a 2.4b and 512mb RDRAM and it flys along.

something to check open System Properties > Advanced > on performance click settings > Advanced > under Processor Scheduling whats checked if Background Services then change it to Programs

then under Memory Usage click Programs as well as you don't really have enough ram to allocate to cache.

also go back a menu to Visual Effects and set to best performance

Also before I forget hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and see if anything in the Processes list is using CPU time when you are idle ( not running anything... but you knew that ;) ) also how many running processes do you have?

Is your System Tray full of Icons? I disable any startup Items that are not needed until I want them.... MSN and Nvidia's Control Panel are prime examples.

As far as more specs are concered it's a dell desktop with a Recently formatted drive and a fresh (fdisk) install that ran about four months ago. CPU is fuctioning at the correct speed. And when I monitor it it acts normally, does'nt shoot up to hundred percent or anything crazy. As far as your suggestion Halo they look good and they where changed to what you suggesed already for the most part and your right I left the setting for memory usage cause I do only have the 256. As far as a memory manager I ran AOK ramfreer from the MG memory tools. I cut the sys tray to the basics, so there is only two things in the tray. It originaly had almost forty processes running!!! Which i thought was the original problem but since then I have shaved to only about 22-23 which should be fine. All the services that are currently running don't really require many resources. I have pretty much identifies all of the things running and they are either windows services or low running basic files.

Wow nicetime... looks like you are on the ball and have done everything to trace your slowness down, I wish many people would be as thorough as you.

as to a fix, I'll be honest I dunno apart from another 256mb RDRAM but if rams not the issue then thats a waste of $$££s

In bios is your RDRAM set to its rated speed? eg. 600/800/1600

HD is it set to DMA?

    You have latest Chipset Drivers?

    MS updates including SP1?

humour me as I fishing for insperation.........

Ram is 800 and it also is listed as that in the BIOS.
The DMA and the chipset drivers are a good suggestion will try tonight. All hotfixes are installed up to date. Thanks for the help I'm going to mess with it tonight and will give you an update of this nightmare tommarrow...

How old is this pc ? The reason I ask is that some dust might be clogging the HSF causing the processor to overheat.

One item missed! Run a disk check to make sure you do not have any problems with the hard disk. I know you just reformatted. But it could be possible that there some issues with the disk drive. At least run Win XPs error check.

Also, is the hard disk the only item on the primary (I assume its on the primary) controller cable? If not, try putting only it on the cable.

One more thing that you should checkout. It still could be a new virus. There is a new virus called W32/Polybot.l!irc. It is wreaking havok in someplaces. Check out this on McAfee. See if you can find any of these symptoms on your PC.

See if there are upgrades for your virusscan software.

...I have a similar slooooww PC problem

Sorry to ask a dumb newbie question, but is the system tray the list of icons on bottom right or the bottom left(next to Start)? I have 125MB Ram and all I have running at startup (I think - at least according to the icons which are popping up in the bottom right corner)) is my ADSL modem driver, volume control, FreeRAM XP Pro which takes ageeees to load up, hotmail popper (which makes almost no difference), ePrompter, Spyware Guard (takes ages too) and finally Panda AV (loads last and verrry slow). Could you advise me how to speed things up a little? Many thanks

System tray or Systray is the list of icons on bottom right.
Quick Launch is the list of icons on bottom left next to Start - these can be moved anywhere.
125MB is an odd size of memory - more like 128MB.

To speed up things try this:

    and this:
    http://majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25835
    and this:
    http://majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=26149
and then create a new thread with the results plus your system specs so as to not be confused with this one.
