    Hi guys/gals, my laptop has gradually been slowing down so I thought i'd run a few tests and wondered if you could take a look at the results please.
    Couldn't get combofix to run
    Rootrepeal-hung once (or so i thought so I pressed 'cancel' :-o)
    I got the completed screen for MGlogs...... but I couldn't find the MGlogs.zip file! Just the .exe or MGtools folder under C: drive!!
    here are the logs I have though:-

    Thanks in advance:)

    A slow computer is not always due to malware:

    Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:

    * Is boot up slow?
    * Is shutdown slow?
    * Is browsing/surfing slow?
    * Is downloading slow?
    * Is running any application?
    * Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    * Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    * Anything else slow?

    You need to tell me what OS you are running so we can try to get an MGlog.zip.

    Thanks for the swift reply:)
    I have Vista Home premium SP2
    On average the lappy takes about 5 mins from powering on to being able to open a web browser or start an application/program. Powering down is about 2-3 mins.
    svchost.exe and iexplore (iexplore shows twice even though only one browser window open! Is this correct?) are top of the list in the processes, closely followed by RapportService.exe and SearchIndexer.exe However, after the initial boot-up time cpu usage when general browsing is only around 15-20%. Browsing is ok, with an occasional 'ghost image' from a part of a previous web page remaining over the new page. Or scrolling up/down using the slidebar can be a bit jittery or freeze now and then.
    Playing youtube clips can be a bit hit'n'miss, sometimes I have to close the browser and re-open.
    I went to play something in Windows Media player the other day but I gave up after waiting several minutes for it to start (can't remember if it was audio or video though)
    I don't download much so don't know whether it's fast or slow.
    I've not booted in safe mode for a long time, so I don't know whether it'd be faster or not.
    If you need any more info, please ask:)

    Please click Start, All Program, Accessories and you will see ( among other things ) a Command Prompt entry.

    • Right click the Command Prompt entry and select Run As Administrator.
      • It is critical that you run it this way.

    • If you do this properly, a command prompt window will open with a title of Administrator Command Prompt.
    • Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple/brown is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    GetRunKey<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    ShowNew<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    I did as you said and here's what happened:-

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools> No problem
    GetRunKey<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see. This appeared to hang (i ran it twice for a couple of hours, but it appeared to hang both times) but got a runkeys.txt file
    ShowNew<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see. This completed a scan and gave me a log in C:\MGtools\nrefiles.txt

    I don't recall seeing any error messages though (but then I was asleep;))Would you like me to attach the .txt's?

    Okay, there are two runkeys.txt's (as i ran it twice), one newkeys.txt and now an MGlogs.zip for you to mull over.
    Thanks in advance:)

    I am not seeing any malware in your logs. I suggest that you:

    1) use:

    Startup_CPL

    2) post in the software forum and answer these questions in your post:

    Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:

    * Is boot up slow?
    * Is shutdown slow?
    * Is browsing/surfing slow?
    * Is downloading slow?
    * Is running any application?
    * Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    * Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    * Anything else slow?

    Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
