slow again

Noticed last night that the computer was slow. (my system is old and small, but I am talking major slow here) Ran avira and SAS, nothing found. Today I did a restore and no more problems...........for about an hour or so. Now it is slow again. Note: it is not just the browser that is slow, everything is slow. Used comodo firewall to shut down the net access, and everything is still slow. Active Ports shows nothing odd going on. Winpatrol shows nothing unusual going on either. Task Manager shows wuauclt running quite often- this is running from System so I assume it is the good one, and not the virus.

What else should I be checking? And why did it work ok for a while after system restore?

Last night, and darned near all night, windows updated. 12 parts! Things seem back to normal now. I wonder if it took that long to download all that stuff and that is what slowed things down? Who would have ever guessed such a huge update.
