Are you positive that these issues are caused by sp2 updates?
If you really have tried everything and you are sure there is no virus infection (not sypware something more powerful and covert like Trojan or worm), then try upinstalling one update at a time and reboot after each uninstall to see if your system goes back to normal.
Generally you should do all Scandisk, defrag, virus check steps before installing any programs or system updates to minimize the chance of running in to any issues like this.

Others might give different suggestions but with this much info this is all I can say...

After installing sp1 and 2 and all the web updates i definately noticed slower boot times,I noticed it more because I did it all at once with a clean install,it definately added a few seconds most likely because of the firewall, security centre and all the other extra crap you dont really need.

the lockups could be anything, but most probably driver related due to the install of sp2,If you want to you could uninstall it and try this version from Guru3d.com you can download it and keep it on harddisk so you can have a load of attempts without having to start the download proccess all over again from microsoft,I used it and it hasn't interfeared with security updates from microsoft---

there are many many people who complain about SP2... system slowdowns, system freezing, program crashing etc. you will find lots and lots more about the possible problems here:
    http://www.download.com/Windows-XP-Service-Pack-2/3640-2098_4-10308947.html?sb=3&v=0

i still have it on my system even tho it does slow it down a bit... just not 100% sure that SP2 is responsible for it and therefore still use it even tho i dont really see the up side to using it.
