Slow Boot on Dell Laptop Running XP

This is a Dell Inspiron running XP Home w/SP2, 512 M RAM. It is generally slow, but most troublesome is the slow boot time. It especially hangs for several minutes at the XP splash screen, then the welcome screen. I have ran all the usual (and not so usual) malwre routines (SpyBot, AdAware, Ccleaner, Combofix, AVG AntiSpyware, etc.). Nothing of interest there. I have ran chkdsk and defrag, turned off all startup items in msconfig, and turned off all non-microsoft services, to no avail. I have searched through this and other forums, also with no luck. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

One odd thing that I noticed was that there are two identical display adapters listed in Device manager. I don't know if this would have anything to do with the problem but I'm kind of afraid to disable or uninstall one of them. Would that cause me to lost my video?

 

Thanks. I have already done all of the basic maintenance routines and more. I tried BlackViiper's "Safe" Services configuration, but it actually slowed my boot time down even more, and resulted in loss of my network connections, so I returned to the previous settings. One other note, I find that opening a program the first time after boot up is very slow (for instance Internet Explorer or Control Panel may take 10 to 15 seconds to open), but the next time it opens up almost immediately.
