I also just got a new HP Pavilion dv9500 notebook with Vista Home Premium. I've never actually timed the bootup it but it seems like 3 to 4 minutes. At some time during the bootup, the screen is blank except for cursor.

When it finally gets all booted up, everything is good. I like the notebook, it works perfect and is plenty fast.

Because of the slow bootup, I just leave the thing on all day and just put it into the sleep mode when not using.

thanks for the tip...I actually purchased the pro edition...seems like a good utility, although it hasn't affected the boot up problem...on a related note: when I go into the startup tab on msconfig...i have a few duplicate entries...is that a problem? should i uncheck one of the duplicates, and if so which one? first or last instance?

    thanks,

I have vista ultimate, mine boots a little slower than xp, but not 3 min. The double entrys are likely to be from two installs, if not leave them alone. The very first time i installed vista it was incredibly slow, reinstalled and worked like it should, no idea why. ed

You and I shared the same problem...very slow boot up with the HP laptop...I finally called HP tech support and they told me to take these actions:
    1. remove and reseat memory sticks...very easy to do
    2. remove battery, then hold power switch down for 30 seconds
    3. go online and install this patch:
    ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp36501-37000/sp36812.exe
    4. create a new administrator account on your machine
    5. delete the old administrator account on your machine.

I did all this and my machine now starts like lightning.
