Slow computer and menu bar icons not showing......

    Please help. I've got a dell unit running at 2.79mgz and it has gotten slower and slower over the last year since I've bought it. Also my icons by the clock don't show up most of the time on a restart. Where to start?? Oh, I'm running xp2.
