Windows 10, i5 7th gen, 8gb RAM. This computer boots super slow. Programs open very slowly. Just went through malware removal and got it cleaned up. Tim didn't see anymore malware. Any ideas? He did say I have a lot of processes running...I don't know which ones to shut down. Let me know what logs you'd like posted from the scans.

    1. Back up your files if you have not already done so.
    2. If any of the following doesn't work in normal mode, reboot the PC into Safe Mode for the next steps.
    3. Type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and choose run as Administrator. At the command prompt, type in sfc /scannow. This will check for and repair errors in Windows 7.
    4. Again from the cmd run as Administrator prompt, type in chkdsk /f. You will be prompted to restart the PC. Upon restart, it will check the hard drive for errors and repair all but the worst cases. In the unlikely event this causes the PC to freeze, it gets stuck on a certain part of the repair (example: 10%) or you see a lot of errors that were repaired the drive is likely failing and it's time to replace it.
    5. Type "defragment" in the search box, click on Defragment and Optimize Drives. This will organize the contents of the hard drive for faster performance.
    6. In a worst possible case after a major malware removal, Windows may be so corrupted it cannot be brought back to normal performance. In this case I'd cut my losses and do a clean reinstall from the manufacturer restore option if your PC has this feature.

Does it have an SSD drive?

No. I wish it did have an SSD. Your suggestions have helped. I want to see if my brother uses the tiles. Nothing but a waste of resources. I don't remember having to do a registry hack to disable all of them, but that seems to be the best solution I can find. I want to turn off the animations as well. Another waste of resources.

The thought was that if it is a fault in the drive then it is probably best not to use the machine.
You could always clone the drive onto a small SSD and connect the hard drive into a USB3 caddy...

    Good luck with the journey...

    Thanks Stephen and gman863!

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I've been on the run for days now. The drive seems fine. It's just a spinster and I'm used to SSDs. If my brother wasn't such a cheapskate, I would have upgraded his drive for him. At least I got him to spring for a backup drive, which he actually keeps plugged in! It is running faster than it did before.

Thanks again, I do appreciate your help. You folks are all so wonderful for helping.

this program does a very nice job of disabling unneeded services that impact CPU resources while securing privacy & improving performance, it may save you the grief of hacking the registry.
it'll prompt you to make a back-up that you can use to restore the system just in case you do not care for the changes that it will make.
