    Hi all,
I am a newbee here, so please excuse my errors.
My computer is extremely slow now. I am running XP home edition, and I have 68.1 GB out of 149 available space on C drive. I have deleted temp internet files, and it says I do not need to defrag.
I have Avast running, and use Adaware, spybot,& Super-antispyware.
Internet Explorer 8, Outlook Express, Yahoo Mail....all extremely slow and to top it all....I am on dialup.:cry
Because of this, I downloaded Firefox to see if it would be any faster, but it just crashes and won't even load at all.
I made a log on Hijack This, but haven't a clue what to do with it.rolleyesrolleyes
I would really appreciate any help I can get as to ideas on what I can do to get the little speed I used to have back and running. Oh yes, the little pop-up keeps appearing saying my system is running over the maximum heat suggested (Intel). I did try to blow it out with "Dust Off", and leave the side off, to no avail.
    :(
Would it help to show you the log from Hijack? (I attached it, I think.:major)
    Thanks very much.
    Cheers!:)

hmm well first lets see your average active programs list in task manager (ctrl + alt + del>processes) then take screen shot or just retype the list and post it so we can see how many resources are being taken up because based on you hijack this log i think i could be overload of too many processes, also try a virus scan just to be sure and post any results

ps: system specs please like ram, processor...

It looks like heat is your main problem here, you need to check that your heatsink/fan is making a good contact with your CPU heat spreader.

To do this is not so easy if you have no prior PC building experience, if you have, read Digerati's post number 8 in this thread on reseating a heatsink/fan correctly.

Hello all, and thank you so much for all of the help which I am still involved in.
Red Death68 asked for more system info:
    Pentium (R) 4CPU 3GHz
    3.GHz, 992 MB Ram
    C/used space=80.5 GB
    free space=68.4 GB
    Capacity=149 GB

XP Home edition - version 2002 - service pk 3

Red Death 68 also suggested I should send active programs (contol, alt, del) which I shall put on here as attachments, as there are two..! (list to long for one attachment)
The virus scan is just not working. I've done it twice now, and it takes forever, makes a list with..."unable to scan" next to each and every one!
:cry (I'll look into this later)
Satrow- Thanks for your idea on the fans. If none of the other fixes work, I'll take my computer down to the "shop", as I know nothing about PC building, as you have probably guessed by now.;) I'll tell him what you said, and appreciate your thoughts!
Kestril 13! Great! I'll certainly try everything here that I haven't done already! VERY useful indeed!

since your anti virus isn't working i suggest you try malwarebytes form this link http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html
it says its shareware but i have never had to pay for mine and i got it from this link
registering/buying just adds like a new feature or two

as for the process just judging by the fact you have to use 2 lists i think you might have to many running

your ram seems good so that shouldnt be the problem

your processor seems pretty good it circa 2005 so its recent (probably more recent then mine) so it should hold up pretty well but ill wait to post full judgement until after i see the list of processes

Sorry Red Death, I thought I put the two attachments on...I'll try again.
Well, maybe they are too large. It said they were uploading, and for me to wait....I did...for about 5 min..nothing. Here they are reduced in size.
Perhaps they are too small for you to read? I cropped them and saved them in .jpg.
I am in the process of downloading your suggested "MalwareByte..." Thanks for this also! :)

    Hi Red Death,
It seems I can't send you a private message as I have not yet 50 posts. So I'll try again to put the two attachments on. They are small, so not sure why they keep falling off. Thanks!

    Hi Dom Luc,
Thank you so much for your suggestions.
I've made a startup as you suggested, and hope it gets attached.
I didn't know you could alphabetize the processes. I'll try that next. Thanks again.
Yes, it seems I have way to many startups, but did not know how to fix same. I love that CCleaner program!
    Cheers!

Dom Luc suggested I alphabetize the processes (he told me how) so here they are again in alphabetical order. Hope they are not too small?

heres a small list of disableables:

    adobe photo downloader uneeded
adobe speed launcher depending on frequency of use
advanced system care i would just start it when needed
google desktop search if you dont use it frequently
eeventmanager idk what its for but some sites say it can be hidden malware
hp software update its better to do this manualy thus increasing startup speed
    High Definition Audio
-Property Page Shortcut since it not a core process i suggest you disable it
hotkey comands keep only if used frequently
    itunes helper disable
    quick time task not neccasary
    soundman uneeded
msmgs disable unless you use it
    wmpnscfg it doesnt seem neccasary

    Hi again,
Red Death, are you on dialup too?
I forgot to mention, when I did the Malwarebytes scan, it found a trojan.agent. However, after looking it up, it seems not to really be a real Trojan virus...just a nuisance thing. It was deleted though, of course.
Also, after doing all of the things you all suggested, I am no longer getting the pop-ups telling me that my CPU is too hot! So thanks again!

well thats good and no im on like 54mb broadband or sumtin like that

    Hi Red Death,
Wow! That sounds like the speed of light, 54 mb broadband! Right now I'm on top speed 26.4 kbps!! Usually it is 24 same. But I live out in the "toolies"...desert!
I noticed you have a Yahoo (Y) as a reply place. I have yahoo mail too. Can't figure out why I have to log in each time I go there, even if it's only minutes since I got out! I must have something set wrong, but it just started happening a few months ago, and I don't think I changed anything.. Still like it though. Great spam catcher!

    Hi again,
While looking at all of the processes running in Task Manager, I see there are two iexplore.exe! One has a memory use of 44,044K while the other is using 18,856K. Is this ok to have both?:(

Not unless you have more than one browser open, usually it isn't.

For starters, one thing I noticed that hasn't been addressed is all that anti-virus, and anti-spyware you are running.

Two very affordable options (free) are AVG anti-virus, and either Spybot S&D, or Windows Defender.

You really only want one of each type of software running.

Have you updated to service pack 3, or Internet Explorer 8 yet?

and to fix the mail problem i use opera i had to update my opera from 9.64 to 10.0 and it works perfectly now for my mail

Hi Mr. Mekanic and Red Death,
    Many thanks for your replies.
Yes, I have IE8 and SP3. I only have AVAST running all of the time as my anti-virus program. The others I have to open up now to use. I like AVAST better than AVG which I used for a couple of years.:)
I've noticed several .exe processes duplicated (ctr/alt/del). I see svchost.exe (system) on the list 4 times! Is this normal? Should I try to delete one of the two iexplore.exe? The other dups? If so, how do I delete these safely?
Red Death, do you like Opera better than Firefox? Should I try Opera?
    Thanks again for any suggestions.
    Cheers!

It's quite normal for IE8 to have 2 or 3 processes running, also svchost.exe uses many instances, currently I have 8 running :)

EDIT: I also rarely use it ;) I just checked; it loads 1 instance on startup, a second when you load the first page and I got a third instance when I downloaded a .pdf (which opened within IE).

    Thanks DomLuc,
I did what you said, exited IE, opened task manager, and there were no iexplore.exe showing. However, upon opening IE again and task manager...there were again two iexplore.exe. Is this ok?:confused

    Hi DomLuc,
Ok...thanks. Would you happen to have an idea as to why Firefox crashes and won't load. I have downloaded it several times, and it just won't work. I've heard Firefox is better than I.E. and would like to try it.
    Cheers!
