I have way over half of my hard-drive space free, but my computer still runs very slow. I know I do not have any Malware. What could be causing my computer to run so slow?:confused

    Can't Update Windows

Windows update keeps failing on me. Also some of the driver updates from SlimDrivers keep failing as well.:(

I know I do not have any malware on here. What could cause these updates to always fail?:confused

No way to tell for sure. How long has it been slow? Have you installed any hardware or software just before it slowed down? Even something plugged into a USB port could cause it.

If there is a lot of disc activity, it could be a failing disc, RAM gone bad or failing interface hardware/software.

You could have malware on your PC. There is a forum dedicated to troubleshooting that possibility. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=30&f=35

What active anti-virus software are you using? Are you certain that you have no more than one AV package running?

Does it only run slowly when you are on-line? If so, it could be your communication software or hardware. Or, if you have automatic software upgrades scheduled, there may be a large software patch attempting to download.

    Re: Can't Update Windows

You mentioned on the Hardware forum that your computer is very slow. I suspect it is all related.

I already have posted on the malware forum here and got that all checked out. It has been running really slow since the hard-drive was packed so full of stuff there was no room left. But now more then half of the drive is free and it still runs slow. There are some other problems with the computer too. (like windows update not working.) There used to be 7 different users on this computer(now only one) and I would suspect that there is allot of stuff just sitting around on the computer from various things. Also several large backups of the system used to be on this computer(which was a big reason why there was no space) but they are gone now. So I still don't know what the problem is....

What Operating System do you use?
    How much RAM is installed?
When was your last GOOD defrag?

It is vista. I don't know about the memory.

I have been trying to run that defragmenter on the HDs from tools options.

Also try looking what programs are running at startup as this can slow the computer down.

go to start then type msconfig in the box
then click on the startup tab and see what programs are in there that are checked.

Also, I can't seem to be able to change the name of the one account I still have on this computer. No matter what I do in Control Panel the account name stays the same. :confused

It says my AV is Norton? I changed to Kaspersky a while ago. So that is wrong also.

    Greetings, Gumshoe546...

One quick way to discriminate between hardware or software slowdowns is to boot into Safe Mode - if your machine is noticeably faster while running in Safe Mode, then it's a good bet that some 3rd-party programs are dragging you down...

Your Speccy report does indeed indicate that you are running a Norton suite (both antivirus and firewall) - if you have installed Kaspersky, then you have in effect two antivirus programs butting heads. I'd suggest using the Norton Removal Tool to clean out all traces of the Symantec software...

I also noticed that TeaTimer is running - AFAIK, this is a Spybot process that is known to slow down (especially Vista) machines...

And, are you using the Chrome browser? Reason I ask - many users inadvertently install Chrome as part of another install package or because of the easily accessed install button on the Google home page. If you're not using the browser, I suggest uninstalling it...

I ran the Norton tool, but now the Speccy report says the firewall and anti-virus status is disabled................
Is there anything anything wrong with this now?

That can't be good - have you tried to manually enable them? If so, what happens?

And, what happened with the other suggestions (Safe Mode, TeaTimer, Chrome)?

Sorry, someone changed my account name and I had to get a new account. I hope that can get fixed.......

But anyway, the speed of the computer does not seem to be a big issue now. I have had karpersky up and running ever since I took norton off of here.
But as I said, the speccy log file says the antivirus is "disabled" but it is not. So I don't understand.

    Good morning...

Could very well be a false Speccy flag - glad you're getting things sorted...
