slow computer

I'm clean, on line scanned with panda nad microtrend, scanned with webroot and MS beta. I've scan disked and defraged.

I know there's a program to ID the programs that are running and can prevent them from opening. Can you reccomned?

Is there anything else I can do? I'm running XP v2002 sp2 w? p4 1.69gh and 256ram.

I know there's some reg cleaners for 98.

Hitting Ctrl + Shift + Esc will bring up your task manager. On the processes tab, you will see a listing of every application/service that is running on your system. You can highlight these and end them. Use caution though, as some are required for normal function of the operating system and its peripherals.

If you press the windows key + r (or click start --> run), the run dialog will appear. If you type 'msconfig' (without the quotes) and press enter (or click ok), the system configuration dialog will appear. On the startup tab, you will see a listing of every application that is set to run every time you start you computer. You can uncheck these so that they will not run at startup (some will terminate after execution, others will run continuously), and therefore not consume resources.

There are registry cleaners for Windows XP. Try the registry link at the bottom of any major geeks page, you will get a listing of nice (some free *thumbs up*) utilities for cleaning your registry.

I wouldn't be so confident that you are free from malware, though. I would recommend that you follow the steps outlined in this thread.

This will ENSURE your system is clean. I've used a setup like your own, thought I was clean, much like yourself, followed this thread and still found malware infections. Their entire goal is to defeat your systems. This thread is definitely worth a visit.
