Looking for some advice here- Originally a Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ, 512MB RAM, 120 GB, GeoForce 4 MX 440

Just installed an extra 512MB of RAM, and upgraded to a Geoforce 6600. After this everything slowed down, icluding startup. Now I am an avid reader of this site so I have read everything I could find and attempted-

Searched for all virus and spyware using using "chaslangs" indepth procedure.
used "sysinfo.org" to remove all unneeded programs at startup
removed any programs I am not running
    Defragged
and any other tips I have read on this site- but I am not getting any traction. At times the computer will get 2 miuntes into startup and then rebbot itself, and then it will work.

I looked thorugh all posts before posting, so I am looking for any other advice that anyone can give.

Thanks in advance and great site.

Did you clean out your hard drive and remove unneeded startup items? CCleaner can do this for you:

    Defrag again afterwards.

Unsure of startup items, let us know what your unsure of.

Industry standard should be 1 gig of ram, optimal settings for DDR ram means you need to use 2 slots with the same ram, so 2 512 meg chips of ram, for example.

Try taking out the extra RAM you put in and see if that makes any difference.

It also wouldn't hurt to try a memory tester like MemTest or MemTest86.

Also, check to make sure your new video card is detected and displayed correctly.

I'd recommend that you follow these instructions, skipping the parts you've already done (and the ones MA has already suggested). I'd expect that if you don't see any improvement after this that you have a hardware issue. At that point, I would try running the system without the newest stick of RAM.

edit: Insomniac beat me to it!

Much appreciated. I will try the memtest and see what happens

This site has some very good tweaking guides - for WinXP and for the Nvidea video drivers (some games, too - but I have not used those).

Just something to look at if it turns out not to be a hardware problem. I have found it useful for both ATI and Nvidea related issues.

I think what you should try is to select "Adjust for best performance" (rather than the "custom" setting as shown). This may not look as nice but should reduce some of the demands of the OS on your system by eliminating some of the fancier display elements. (The "Adjust for best appearance" setting will turn on a number of pleasing visual effects but at the cost of the OS demanding more from your hardware to provide the extra visual touches.)

Have you tired removing that stick of RAM yet to see if it could possibly be the culprit?

Been out of town for awhile. I tried the mem-test and everything went smooth. I just downloaded "everest", I was wondering if I attached that report to this fourm if anyone might be able to spot something that is causing the slowdown.??

Just an FYI, even after removing items from startup by reading the "sysinfo', it is sometimes taking minutes to start, or rebooting itself. It usually only happens once, than will start the next time.

I ran through every step of the malware threads one more time just to double check myself and everything seems clean.

    Thanks

    BCP4 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product 768_1

Thanks, and again let me know if I should post any specific info from any reports I can run.
