    Some things I would look at/try;
    Does it run okay in safe mode? What about diagnostic mode? If yes, we are very likely dealing with drivers or system files.
    From a command prompt, run
    SFC /scannow
    Note the space before the /.
    Any yellow flags in your device manager?
    After setting a restore point run dialafix;

    It would seem you may have orphaned some hard drive space, but this probably isn't worth going after right now. :wave:wave:wave

    1st of all thank you so much for the response...:drool OK..it does load up on safe mode but i dont know how to run diagnostic mode:-o & from the "command prompt" do you mean the "run" box on XP or command promp in safe mode...or something else?:-o im sorry i dont know too much...obviously..if the command prompt is the run box i tried to run "SFC /scannow" & the computer did nothing:confused if theres a different way please let me know..& by "yellow flags" in device manager what are you referring to? something in-particular i should be looking for? again im sorry for the lack of knowledge..& i didnt mention before but all my restore points dont work also & system restore is on & monitoring so i dont know if my "system restore will work"..it shows checkpoints but when i tried to run it a few days ago it said it couldnt perform the task..it tried tho..:confused i didnt run dialafix yet due to the fact that i didnt know how to run "diagnostic mode or SFC /scannow" yet & thought that would matter...please let me know how to perform the other tasks (diag. & SFC) or if i should just go ahead & do dialafix...thank you:wave

    But it runs good in safe mode?? That's a great sign and indicates a solvable problem. If safe runs good, forget about the diagnostic mode, won't be needed now.
    In that "run", type cmd.
    In the black screen, type sfc /scannow Note the space after the /
    Let that run, forget about the dialafix for now. If you can't do a restore, that could be a problem. And this sounds like either a corrupt driver, possibly malware.
    To eliminate the latter, follow the steps from;
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
    Then come back if all is clean. :wave:wave

    OK...so i got the SPL /scannow to run & it says "Files that require windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cashe"...problem is i dont have a windows XP CD...i dont think my computer came with 1 & if it did its in Florida in my desk & im in Tennessee...i did make a copy of windows system recovery disc yesterday (even though i had it already loaded on my computer but couldnt get it to work) & i recall it saying something about loading Windows XP from that disc...will that work? or is there another way i can do this? & the malware forum was the 1st one i went to & they said i was clean...i can do the steps again if u think i need to...hopefully the info from SPL /scannow will help you...just let me know what you want me to do from here...thank you so much for your patience with me:-o

    Now it sounds like a progressive hardware problem, sorry.
    If you can get booted into safe mode, from that cmd box, type chkdsk /f
    Then reboot and let it run.
    If you can get booted into safe mode, start copying all files you need/want.
    I think, most likely HD problem/failure.
    Maybe RAM and there are tests for that.
    Could be MOBO.

    Any one else want to offer other advice? :wave

    Thing is sometimes it boots...sometimes not...i just booted in REG mode & got the command box up to try & run SFC /scannow again...when it asked me to insert the Windows XP disc to add files to the DLL cashe, can i use the Recovery console disc? i was reading that the iso recovery disc is like having the Windows XP disc...should i try that? if i can get it there?:confused

    Y0u might be able to get it from the recovery disk, if you can locate an I386 folder on it, but this does get complicated, this feature from MS is not one of the most friendly ones. Though I'm not certain about an ISO disk.

    Still, the intermittency of your problems points more to hardware. Unplug it, press the start button repeatedly to discharge capacitors, wait 15 minutes, take the side off the box, and check all connections you can. Wiggle them while gently pushing in, esp. to the hard drive and the RAM boards. Even better to remove the RAM boards and any seperate any connections you can and replug, some of these are rather tricky though. While you're in there, remove the silver battery on the MOBO, leave it out for 20 minutes, put back in. I fixed a computer just last week, from some loose connections.

    By the way, how dusty is it? Clean it gently, best with canned air but a light artist's brush works, (clean of course). Fan box good and clean?

    This thread has progressed from almost certainly a software to almost certainly a hardware problem. Hardware problems more often result in these erratic booting issues. And while you may also have software issues, you at least need to get a consistency in booting, whether in normal or safe mode. Also, after doing all this, disconnect all hardware normally connected to the computer, just the stand alone machine, keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

    Stay determined and you'll get there! :wave:wave:wave
