Slow internet through router

    So here's my problem:
I live on campus at college and when I plug in the ethernet cable to my computer, everything is fine. However, when I connect it to a router (Netgear WGR614), the internet light is orange (which I think means bad/slow connection) and when I am browsing the internet, many times it will have trouble connecting to a web page. Most of the time I will get a "Page Load Error," but I'll refresh after a few seconds and the page will load. Sometimes I'll have to refresh many times to get the page to load. And even then, the page might not even display properly. Instead of the page looking like it should, the background will be white and the rest is just text. And sometimes I'll get a message telling me I do not have the latest version of Adobe flash reader installed (which I do). But usually after a few refreshes and a long time to load, the page will appear as it should. Again, when I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, everything runs very well. My question is: Is it possible that the router is bad? Could the router be too slow? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Notes:
-The reason I want to use the router is because I want to have my xbox 360 hooked up also. The xbox is able to connect to the internet and works very well even when hooked up to the router.
-This setup (xbox and computer hooked up to this router) worked well when at home which was connected to a cable modem.
-Everything is connected with ethernet cables (wireless is turned off).

I think your netgear is not fault, but it acts like a bridge in the process there is a lot of redundancy in the middle,
you are suppose to reconfigure that router when using it at the compus to work as an access point(router mode but not a gateway)if there is a another router acting as a gateway for the Compus network.
if possible i will suggest buy a small Switch(8 port), and use it instead of your router.

    Regards!
