It takes over 10 mins to load outlook. PC is churning for up to an hour after it is started each day just when I want to check email and go to several websites.
It is slow to load firefox (5 mins). Windows seem to peel down in slow motion when minimizing. Kestrel13! has kindly helped me on removal of malware.
Any suggestions? Done all the Run & Read Me. regards Anne

If you haven't looked over your programs, your computer might be doing some of the following: scanning for malware, getting windows updates (there were at least 10 this month) downloading definition updates for your security programs, looking for updates for things like adobe (flash, reader), looking for Sun Java updates, Hp likes to hog up a computer with update checking, Logitech can also check for updates.

    Do you have CCleaner installed?
If not, get it and install it and I'll then tell you step 2.

Open CCleaner and in the left pane, click on Tools. Then click the Startup Button. At the bottom right, you will see a "Save to text file" button. Click it, and in the popup box, select desktop so you can see it easily. Post below mine and attach startup.txt to your post.
I'll look over everything that is running at startup to try and figure out if anything there is causing the churning.

    Hi

really hope you dont have all that starting with your PC as no wonder its slow, but I think you have copied the text from the wrong menu, its as plodr mentions the Tools > options > Startup and then save to text, think you hit the Tools > options > uninstall > save to text one instead.

So do attach the Tools > Options > Startup > Save to text file.

I did review your malware thread and one of the logs that list startups and you have a few that need removing, they are not an issue just suck up valuable resources without giving you any benefit, but attach the startup list and we can advise one by one on the ones to remove,

As you mention Firefox being slow is Internet Explorer slow also?

Also start your PC in Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and choose Safe Mode with Networking and is your PC more responsive?

    Hi Plodr & Halo

Here is correct text file, I hope.

Loading IE is just as slow as Firefox. Once loaded pages come up quick enough.

Started in safe mode (sorry forgot networking) and it was more responsive.
I'll try safe mode with networking shortly.

Also will deal with adobe suggestions.

Do you have a lot of desktop icons / items? How much RAM is installed?

12 desktop icons, 504mb of RAM

You have 512MB of RAM and 8MB of that is taken for your video.
It would help if you had 1GB. What is the make and model of computer so I can see how many slots you have and if the RAM has to be installed in matched pairs.

As far as startup items, I do not let most programs check for updates. With that in mind, SSBkgdUpdate, HP Software Update, SunJavaUpdateSched and Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk do not need to be loaded at startup.

LVCOMS has to do with a Logitech webcam. I wouldn't think it needs to startup with windows unless the webcam is on all the time.

OpwareSE4 has to do with your scanner. Again, I don't think it needs to load at startup.

hpqSRMon stop it from running at startup.

PC is Dell Dimension DIM5000 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2 80GHz 2.79GHz 504MB of RAM. This was copied from System tab on Control Panel.
What video are you referring to, which uses 8MB RAM?

Have disabled all these programs at startup including nokia. Attach text file.
Let you know how it differs when start tomorrow.
    Thank you kindly
    Anne

I'm guessing you do not have a video card. The computer would use a chip on the motherboard and somewhere in the specs that came with the computer, it might say something like how many MB of video then 8MB shared. That means the video chip steals from your RAM sticks so 504MB + 8MB stolen = 512MB which is one 512MB stick or two 256MB sticks of RAM in your computer.

I went here www.crucial.com and put in Dell, then Dimension then 5000 Series.
I discovered that you can use up to 4MB of RAM, though if windows is 32 bits, you will only see about 3.2MB recognized.
This is the type and speeds: DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 speeds.
Memory must be installed in matching pairs.
Non ECC and NOT dual channel.

So to increase your memory, you'd buy 2 stick of 512MB and add them.
    Example:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ddr2 pc2-5300&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20
the first two items on that page would work for a 5000 Dell Dimension.

Hi JBLIM, Can you explain your comment a bit more please?
Hi Plodr, Just ordered CT908126 2GB kit (1GBx2), 240-pin DIMM Upgrade for a Dell Dimension 5000 Series System
Starting this am still quite slow even after disabling lots of programs on startup. Should I delete these on startup using ccleaner?

No, do not delete startup programs. Disabling is a lot safer. Also, if you find later you have stopped something from running at startup and you need it, it is easy to enable it again.
    Download this
    http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html
and you simply uncheck what you do not want to run at startup.

I'll look over your items again to see if there are other things we can disable.

I have never used Outlook but perhaps someone who has can tell you how to compress and streamline it so it loads in under 10 minutes.

Long time since I used Outlook but delete all the emails you don't need, empty the trash/deleted email folder (these steps are vital because the emails are all in one .pst file, you need to create free space within that file before you can compact it).

I just looked up MS's method for Outlook 2003 (I think):

Thanks to all. Took 2 mins to load Outlook this morning. Windows still peeling down in slow motion. Looking forward to upgrading RAM to 2GB. best wishes, Anne

The desktop 'peeling' effect maybe a sign that the graphics drivers or DirectX are not correctly installed but with only 8MB of RAM dedicated to it you may get a speedup by dropping the Desktop resolution to 24 or 16-bit colours.

Once you have the extra RAM installed, you may be able to allocate more RAM to the graphics via the BIOS.

    Hi

As well as the options for disabling startups that plodr mentioned, also disable or delete these

    • Yes HKCU:Run ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (info on this is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599 but tbh not many users actually use alternative inputs so if you dont use this free app HERE to disable it as doing in the startup will not work properly as it recreates itself as the instructions from Microsoft for disabling this are a tad longwinded albiet correct but this app works better and one I use all the time)
    • Yes HKLM:Run IgfxTray C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe (this is the Intel Graphic drivers menu, just not needed as you can get to it via control panel or right click on the desktop and choose Properties)
    • Yes HKLM:Run SoundMAXPnP C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe (Disable as this is the Soundmax audio menu, like the Intel one its also found in Control Panel)
    • No HKLM:Run SunJavaUpdateSched "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe" (delete this one as not needed, but each time you update Java check again this list and delete it again as it gets recreated)

What version is your ZoneAlarm application? is it just the firewall or is it internet security, but either disable it or uninstall it and see if your PC is more responsive as this app can slow down PCs, worked on one this week in which it was the culprit, changed it for PCtool firewall and the PC was running better.

I do agree with the others and more ram will help alot.
