Slow PC and No updates

Hello All,

I am having an issue with a friend or a friends PC.
Bought about 5 years ago and never been on to Windows updates, never had anti-spyware installed or removed, only had norton anti-virus.

currently from switch on to desktop is 3-5 minutes.
I have tried running through the XP cleaning thread, this was an excellent help.

I have run Ccleaner (new version with updates), removed 4gig for temp files Spybot S&D (with updates) and removed 50 items.
I have run a quick Malware scan and removed another 11 items, but a full scan freezes, Combo fix wont run, it freezes.

Where can I download XP home SP2 and SP3 from and install these?
Can I run Combofix in safe mode?

Or should i remove the internal drive, connect it to a laptop and scan it as a removable drive?

do you know where can I download SP2 and SP3 from please?

 

Once you go through the read and run me and get a clean chit from the malware experts, installing the service packs will be a breeze. No point going for the service packs on a infected system they probably won't Install anyway....

Found out the North bridge Heat sink had fallen off.
I connected the drive to another PC and removed everything that way, and then ren defrag, will re-attach tonight and see how it runs.
