I have recently fixed a malware issue on my computer from help on this forum :) I've also had a slow speed problem with my computer.

    See: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=163870

I've been through the help read me on about installing a recommended firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware scanner and now my computer loads up quite slowly and is slow to load a lot of programs etc.

I've removed a lot of applications, ran registry mechanic and fixed all the issues, I've scanned for out of date drivers and fixed these. I've also defragmented the hard drive, run scandisk, diskcleanup, CCleaner and ATFCleaner.

I've been recommended to use a startup manager so I will look at this tonight. I still think my registry has entries in it from out of date software I don't use anymore.

Also I haven't yet paid for a windows genuine advantage license (see post in link) as I'm waiting till I get paid, but I can't get the .NET framework critical update is this an issue (i've uninstalled .NET framework from my computer as I no longer use it).

Other than updating the RAM is there any other diagnostics I can do to get a faster boot time or faster running PC in general? I have 512 Mb RAM (Only 448 is usable as another device uses the rest (can't remember which).

Any help would be very much appreciated thanks.

On the PC maintenance article it mentions about the startup items, I've set msconfig back to Normal startup and I've also been advised about using a startup manager and downloaded this. Any further advice relating to this that's not in the links?

Looking to upgrade it as soon as possible - what would you recommend in terms of how much? Is it best to get a new motherboard as well?

ccleaner as a built in startup manager. To use it- click on the "tools" button.

You do not need these starting up when you boot your computer:

ctfmon.exe - C:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe (although, you may want to just not bother removing it since everytime you start up a MS Office product, it'll restart)
    SunJavaUpdateSched - "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe",
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe",
    "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime,
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0 \Distillr\Acrotray.exe"

Thanks removed all these I'm going to wait till I get the windows xp license to get service pack 3 then remove the services. Will update RAM at a later date also.
