My PC was running slow. It runs under Windows XP HE SP2. I have Windows Firewall turned off and use Comodo Firewall Pro. My antivirus is Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic. I use Adaware, CCleaner, SpybotSD & Spyware Terminator. I have the latest versions/upgrades of all these. I have all the latest updates including those from Windows Updates. My browser is Firefox and my emil client is Thunderbird. Again these are the current versions and uptodate.

I have cleaned up my computer my using 'Search' to find all files ending *.tmp and deleted them and using Run to find temporary files with %temp%

I have not cleaned out the prefetch folder.

I have cleaned up the Internet Cache. I have used Windows Cleanup and CCleaner to clean up. I have used Run to do sfc /scannow in case any Windows stuff was missing and I have run CHKDSK in safe mode. I have defragmented the hard drive using Disk Keeper Lite.

I then took my PC to a computer store and had them put in more RAM. I upgraded from 512 MB to 1 GB. They said 1 GB was big enough if using Windows XP.

Still I feel my PC is sluggish - any ideas as to what I might do now?

It would also help if you posted your system specs.

Thanks for the ideas, suggestions, etc. I have tried all the suggestions you mention that's why I posted here.

I've done all the cleaning recommended. I've even made sure that at start up I only have those programmes running that are really necessary.

I have cleaned the registry with CCleaner. My Adaware is the free version and I don't use TeaTimer in Spybot.

Re: the sluggishness when I went from 512 MB to 1 GB I didnt think I'd gone from an old Ford to a Porsche but I did expect to see some improvement.

Some ideas of things that go really slow. Microsoft Office documents are slow to open. If I want to see a hidden file I go to My Documents or My Computer, click on Tools then Folder Options then View then I click Show hidden files and folders and finally click on Apply I then have to wait ages until I can click on OK - it's like the machine has frozen.

When I open my web browser (Firefox) it takes a while to open and then after its been open a minute or so it behaves as it its not the window I'm working and this also happens if I open another window.

As regards spyware, viruses, etc. My PC is clean according to Adaware, Avira, Spyware Terminator and Spybot.

So don't know why it's so slow.

One thing I notice is this (particularly from a security standpoint):

When you run SFC, you replace Windows files FROM DISK. Meaning that in many cases, you are actually downgrading your software (albeit to known working versions)

Did you re-update Windows after doing so? If not, you have been running an unpatched machine since you ran your SFC, and may be vulnerable to malware, as per previous suggestions.

I have now run the recommended checks. I don't think they found anything but I attach the logs for you to review.

Despite having done all these things my PC is still slow. For example, after I had run these checks I went to hide hidden folders, to not show extensions, etc. by going to My Computer clicked on Tools clicked on Folder Options clicked on View and then checked 'Do not show hidden files and folders', 'Hide extensions for known file types' and 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'. Then I clicked Apply and I had to wait three minutes before I was able to click OK.

I don't know which of the checks did this but I wasn't happy that it changed my default web browser from Mozilla Firefox back to IE.

Because there are seven logs I'll add two more replies to this one.

    Apologies!

Any ideas on the continued slowness or do I need to wait until the logs have been scrutinised?

The Malware Forum have checked my logs. They have found that my PC is free of malware. As my PC is still slow they've advised me to return to this forum for further advice/help.

Turn off indexing service if you haven't already done so.

When this happens, press ctrl+alt+del and notice what process is using most of the % of the CPU and write it down. If it seems to be more than one, write down what is eating up the cpu. Once we have a name, we may be able to figure out what is going on during this delay.

Can you please tell me how to quote? (I must seem really thick!)

What does the indexing service do? Can you please tell me how to turn it off? What are the consequences of turning it off? Why does this make Office 12 applications slow to open?

When "... I want to see a hidden file I go to My Documents or My Computer, click on Tools then Folder Options then View then I click Show hidden files and folders and finally click on Apply I then have to wait ages until I can click on OK - it's like the machine has frozen." I cannot open Task Manager. Everything freezes. I can't open Task Manager using crtl+alt+del nor can I open it by right clicking on the Task Bar. Of course, when I can click OK everything is unfrozen and when I open Task Manager there's no problems.

to quote type the following [ quote ] the words you want quoted[ /quote ]
Now I have spaces in between the [ and q you must type it without any spaces so the quoted section shows; likewise no spaces between the e and ]
Turn off indexing service how and why to do it

You still have not answered what was asked in post #4. I'm actually interested in the speed of the computer and how large a hd you have and how much remaining space.

Do you have both SuperAntiSpyware and AntiVir set to run at startup?
I see it running in your runkeys file, yet you don't have it listed as a program in your first post.
You might have too many monitoring programs running and that can bring a computer to its knees!
Before the computer freezes up, press ctrl+alt+del What is running?
