slow shortcut keys

I sometimes experience that when I press a shortcut key that I've set in the properties of a start menu item (for instance ctrl+alt+P to load MsPaint) XP does nothing (it actually almost freezes) for about 20 seconds and then it loads the program

every time the cpu is almost idle at the moment I press the shortcut key combination

any idea why this is happening?

 

Can't help you with your shortcut problem but may I suggest

and do away with your icons altogether.

I have 160+ magicWords instead of icons. First most essential program, after Firewall and anti-virus installed, for me.

It is a hell of a lot more intuitive to remember than keyboard shortcuts.

Ex gives me Windows Explorer,
AOL gives me AOL,
X gives me Excel,
Mydocs goes to My Documents,
E; goes to me E: drive, etc.
Ad to AdAware,
Av to Avast,
Spy to Spybot S & D,

you get the idea.

It uses a form of AutoComplete so that F will give you Freecell if that is the only MagicWord starting with F.

Leaves all I have tried in the past for dead. Bazza

Has your hard drive powered down and has to restart to run the shortcuts? Listen for whirring sound as hard drive powers up. Might be the answer. Bazza

nope that's not it. my harddisk takes about 1-2 seconds to spin up and this shortcut delay lasts for 15-20 seconds.

I just tried one of the shortcuts while the harddisk was powered down. the hd didn't spin up and the shortcut loaded instantly

so I don't see a pattern between shotcut freeze and harddisk power on/off
