    I have two systems both running XP PRO. Of late, after updating my WinXP I found that both these systems shutdown very slowly. Could this be the result of updating to SP1 and others?
    Would appreciate if someone could advise me as to the best method of a quick shutdown. Thank you. :(

    I have installed SP1 on my machine and haven't noticed any problems with slow shutdowns. There could be many reasons for the problem and unless you are getting an error message it would be hard to pin-point. I have noticed that with using a registry cleaner it does help with slow systems. This may not solve your problem but it couldn't hurt to think about one. How long is it taking to shutdown? I would say it takes around 10-15 seconds for mine to complete a shutdown.

    SWAT-SHARK - It takes about 25 to 35 seconds or more to shutdown. Maybe registry cleaning will help. Thanks.
    ROBO - Thanks for your suggestions.

    The 2 words I see most when looking for the solution is "fast user switching" and "real-time antivirus scanning". I will say that I had a similar problem when I ran Avast before. But the fast user swiching is the term I found the most

    My two biggest culprits to slow shut down on my XP Pro box (as have been mentioned) was using the fast-user switching/non-traditional log in screens and particularly setting the page file to clear at shut down. Seems to be this big fight at shut down to force that fancy "buh-bye" screen up and then clear the page file.

    Windows xp has the service shutdown time set to 20000 ms which equals 20 secs (no wonder it takes so long).
    Go to regedit and change the key :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\WaitToKillServiceTimeout

    I set mine to 0 ms and now i shutdown way fast. Experiment with the settings.

    What would be the alternative to fast user switching. I have 2 accounts admin and limited which I surf with. BTW my shutdown is around 4 min.:eek:

    Thanks

    The only savings off of my original shutdown times are:
    NAV = 10 secs
    ZA = 15 secs

    Everything else mentioned above had no difference.

    Deleting 321170 gave me a message that the following programs may be affected.

    Nero InCD, Burning ROM, MIX and MS hotfixzes 322011, 331953, 814995.

    Nothing above helped me. I do have a second bootdrive with hardly anything on it and it shutsdown in 15 secs.

    My current boot drive has 30 or so Icons, can this be it? They do not run on start up.

    Thanks

    augie
