I have posted on here before but my PC is still terribley slow. Not Internet slow, just slow. Slow start up, slow opening programs, slow opening web pages. It does download pretty fast though. I have cable internet and a wireless n router. I have went thru all kinds of applications looking for malware and my computer is clean, just slow. I will try to give you all the info I can think of. It is a Dell B110, 2.8 Ghz P4, 2 Gig ram, 2 1/2 years old. 60 g HD 30pct full. I run NOD 32 Anti virus, I thought Norton was bogging it down. I run ccleaner and atf file cleaner all of the time, I run the Microsoft defrag, smart defrag, defraggler, spybot, super anti spyware, I have run hi jack this, MG tools, SDF fix, I added another fan thinking it might be hot, I have tried about evrything I can find that says it will speed up your pc. My other computer is a 1.8 P4 8 years old with 512 ram and it is much faster. If I think of anything else I have done, which I am sure I have, I will repost. I am at my wits end. HELP!!!!!!!

    Thanks

I have also reinstalled windows xp several times.

Try Memtest 86 to see if you have bed memory...

    http://majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d1247.html.

Install onto a floppy and boot from it (floppy drive needs to be 1st boot device). Let it run for at least 3-4 full, complete. 100% passes and if it does that wihtout and errors, then you memory is ok...otherwise...errors or freezing can be a cause of bad memory.

If you don't have a floppy, then you can do it on a USB pen drive (set bios to 1st boot device=USB) or you can even download and burn the ISO version...which then your cdrom would need to be the 1st boot device.

ISO version can be found here...actually you can get the floppy, USB and ISO (CD/DVD) version from this link below.

Make sure ALL your drivers are up to date. Go to the website for your motherboard, video card, etc., and download the latest drivers...don't use the windows update for hardware drivers.

Also...what is the rpm speed of your hard drive. I don;t know just how "slow" you are talking in relation to what you think it should be, but a 5400rpm hard drive is noticeably slower that a 7200rpm. that could be what is affecting your boot time and programs loading when you click on the shortcut/icon coupled with your IDE and chipset drivers being out of date.

I am at work but will check it in the morning. How do I know what rpm my Hard Drive is?

    Thanks

Norton is a resource Hog, what Norton product do you have? If you have NOD32 (arguably the best AV) you do not need another and should remove it!

Also you can look in Task Manager and sort "processors" by CPU this will indicate what processors are currently active and how much of the CPU resources they are demanding you may note some processors are using the CPU and can google them, System Idle Process should be at least 90% (97% realistically) when just surfing etc.

I don't have Norton. I got rid of it last year because I thought it was the problem. I have removed every trace of it. System Idle is usually 90-100 except for an occassional spike. I have a samsung sp0802 hard drive that is 7200 rpm and 2g. I tried to update the driver from samsungs web site and it comes as a zip. I saved it to my desktop but when I double ckick to run the exe file, it turned into 2 files I couldn't open or run.

Have you run "chkdsk" to scan the drive?

Also can you goto to Samsung and see if they have a Drive analysis tool and run that.

I ran chkdsk last night and it didn't show anything. I went to samsungs web site and didn't see anything. I tried to find an updated driver and couldn't even find my hard drive. I am getting a new HD tomorrow and I will install that and repost.

Good to hear :major. Give it a defrag once you have everything installed and only repeat a defrag after heavy installation and download periods (every 2 weeks) or every 6 months for standard activity.
