Slow USB Transfer Speed

    HI All,

If I use the 2 USB ports on the front of my case I get a transfer speed of about 11.3MB/s.
If I use the 4 ports at the back of my case(onboard) then I get a transfer speed of about the same.
If I use the 4 ports connected via PCI(not Express) slot I get a tranfer rate of about 4.9MB/s.
The Card connected to the PCI slot is called a Silicon Image Sil 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver.

As far as I know I have the lastest drivers for my motherboard, USB devices and SATAlink controller.
Optimising external Drives and flash drives for performance doesn't make a difference either.

I have no idea why these transfer speeds are so slow and it's very frustrating.

    Hopefully you guys can help.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply Gman but unfortunately that thread didn't help me at all.

    Other ideas?

    1. What version of windows is installed?
    2. How many external USB devices are attached?
    3. What is the model of the PCI card you installed? And why did you install it if the computer has 6 USB ports? Was there a problem with the 6 installed ports?

    Hi plodr,

    Thanks for the reply.

    1. Win XP SP3

    2. Keyboard, Mouse, Printer and 1TB external HDD attached to 4 onboard USB's at the back of case. 1 Internet connection attached to Satalink with 3 open slots. The front 2 USB's I use for Flash Drives and Externals when I'm copying stuff.

    3. There was never a problem with any of my drives. I installed the Silicon Image Sil 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver for the internet connection because I always use the front 2 USB ports and didn't want to have to disconnect and reconnect the whole time and if I ever needed extra drives for any reason. I am also using the Satalink to connect one of my HDD's as I only have 4 SATA ports on my MOBO. The only problem I have now is that the USB transfer speed has become slow and I am not sure why.

    Really hoping you can help!

    Thanks

I still do not know the model of the Silicon Image card you are using; forget telling me the driver; it could be the wrong driver. I need a model number so I can do some searching.

Since the card seems to be the only one offering speeds not up to par with the 6 installed ports, we need to see what can be found about that model card and possible drivers.

Note: I'm having some minor surgery tomorrow so if I disappear, it simply means I am not up to turning the computer on. I will be back when I recover.

    Hi Plodr,

I actually made a mistake with that card, it's a VIA VT6212L not a Satalink! Oops!

Hope the op went well ;-)

    Hope you're doing well plodr.

Ra222r, you may try running USBDeview, http://www.majorgeeks.com/USBDeview_d6115.html
Look at what USB devices are installed on your system. Uninstall anything you recognize and don't use anymore. Take a look at what is plugged into where. You may be having a conflict. You may try uninstalling everything from the affected PCI card and plugging things back in one by one to see if one thing is the problem.

    I found this:
In Windows XP Device Manager, the plug-n-play device appears as VIA USB Enhanced Controller under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. The driver installs automatically once the card is plugged in to the motherboard.

I'd say, remove the card. Then boot up without it and remove the device from hardware and shut down the computer.

Install the card and see if "found new hardware" sees the card and installs the correct driver.
