Slow Win XP

My Win XP is very slow. Slow to respond and slow to answer. What should I do?

 

Please follow these instructions to tweak your system for performance. If you are still not satisfied after this, then consider a hardware upgrade (especially RAM and CPU), or at least following the instructions in the Overclocking Guide.

 

DEFRAGMENT, i didnt think it'd make a big difference but IT DOES!

 

While my instructions included this step, you may want to consider reading this article. This describes in detail why defragmenting doesn't do that much good performance-wise, but is still a good idea.

 

really? it sped mine up to like 5Xs as fast!

What operating system? What filesystem?

Hmmm...and how long had it been since your last defrag? It would take ALOT of fragmentation to slow things down that much, and things are pretty fragmented even after a clean installation.

 

well, i thought when i reinstalled windows, it defragged but someone told me it didnt.
so, 1 yr before re-installing windows and 6 mo after that.

 

Okay, well, you probably had ALOT of fragmentation in that case. Not that I'm saying its a bad thing, but most people defrag enough to keep that kind of fragmentation at bay.
