    Hi!

I've been scrolling through dozens of microsofts help forums but I have I'm haven't been able to find an answer that I'm looking for. So I'll cut right to the problem.

I recently had to re-install windows xp cause of a virus(trojan?) that crashed the computer everytime during start-up. Anyway, I wiped out everything from my laptop and re-installed windows and my basic stuff like Antivirus. I dowloaded 27 updates for windows but something is different from before. It seems that the whole system is laggy and slow. even when I just drag a window across the desktop it flashes and jumps, scrolling through forums is painful cause the text flashes aswell... So what is wrong? Do I need some drivers for my comp and if yes where can I find them. Before the reinstallation the computer worked fine and I have defragged the harddrive and there are no viruses haunting me...

    Please help... : (

it may be that the drivers for your video card have not been properly installed

Where could I find these drivers? Tell me like I was five years old. These things go way over my head... : )

Bert's probably right about that. Do you know what brand of
video chip your comp has? Ati, nvidia? If you know which one it is,
just go to their website and look for support and then drivers and
download the correct driver for your comp. If that is still
too much for you, post what you know about your video card/chip
and maybe somebody can find a direct link for you.

Hmm... I only found a name like this for a videochip, not sure if it's the one you meant, but VgaSave was what I found. I have a laptop which I know this much: (HP) Microsoft Xp Home edition, Service pack 2, ADM athlon xp processor 2800+, 797mhz... I just tried windows troubleshooter for video problems but it didn't help so it's propably cause of I don't have the right driver or something. Did that information help at all? If not where can I find stuff that helps you solve my problem? Uh, I should study computers more... Feeling a bit dumb right about now.

To see what kind of video card you have, go right click on your desktop, and you should get some options. From there, go down to properties. There will be 5 tabs labeled: Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings. Click on Settings. On there, it should display a monitor, and under that it should read ''Display:'', and whatever type of display you have. Just tell me what it says as your display.

It just says "default display, driver" (Propably a poor translation from finnish to english, but still, nothing specific like the full name or stuff like that. I'm sure I followed your instructions properly... Hmm..

It looks like you have not yet installed your video card drivers. Do you know what type of video card you have, or did this video card come with a CD?

Umm.. I think it came with the cd. So frustrating cause I don't know what you mean. : / Everything was ready when I bought the machine and it only had the system recovery cd with it, nothing more(except Works and some yadda yadda stuff). And I also need to install a driver for sounds aswell... media player says that I don't have any sound stuff installed and the comp only lets out annoying 'Bleep' sounds.

Download and install Everest from HERE.

That will tell you what hardware you have, and provide links for drivers.

Wow that's a helpful program... : ) Thanks. So now I know that display is nVidia GeForce4 420 Go 32M and my sound card is nVIDIA MCP2-Audio Codec Interfare. I downloaded a driver that was labeled GeForce something but the computer told that it is not compatible with my software... uh... On the download page there are 6 categories under which I should find what I'm looking for but I'm still a bit lost(getting hysterical right about now) Graphics-, Platform/nForce-, Multimedia software-, Workstation Applications-, Games,Utilities and Tools-, Consumer 3d stereo- Driver... under which I can find my driver? The one I tried was under graphics and it didn't work...

Thank you guys for your help. : )

It would be helpful if we knew what brand of computer that you have. Is it a name brand ( Compaq, Dell, HP, IBM, etc. ), or is it a custom or self build? :)

You are right, and it was my error as I just skimmed through your original post. Now that we know that you have a Hewlett-Packard laptop, what model is it? This should be visible on your laptop somewhere. If I'm wrong, please correct me, but I believe that you restored your computer from the recovery CD? Some laptops come with 2 or 3 CD's and one of them would be your driver CD. Did your computer come with more than one CD? :)

I was pretty sure that I checked the box for more than one CD's but as I re-checked it now I actually found a driver cd.... O _ O Man, I can't describe this feeling with words. So stupid.

But anyway, thank you guys... Atleast we got a good laugh....

You are welcome for the help, and no one is laughing at you about this! Everyone has to learn from somebody, and in the past I've been in the same situation as you. You picked a good site to ask, glad that your problems have hopefully been solved, and Welcome to Major.Geeks! :)

Ah thank you... : ) Yes the problems vanished and my comp is working again, until the next virus crashes it again. Heh. Good to know that a site like this has been created, I'll advertise this to my friends aswell...

    Thanks again!

The drivers supplied with hardware are generally months old or even older.

Now that you know what hardware you have, update all your drivers, especially motherboard and video.
