Hi - I have a Dell Dimension 4400. Its a home system used by the whole family each with a separate user name. I operate it as a stand alone system without any network.

Each time after boot-up, when a user logons it takes 1-2 minutes to go through the logon sequence. If I logout and login in again, the logon goes very quickly. When I did safe networking, the logon went in seconds.

When I logon, the background is diplayed, but the menu bar, toolbars and system tray do not appear for a good minute or two.

I checked the event viewer and below is a typical in order sequence of events - with comments in brackets.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

    Cheers, Eric

[I don't know why this is here - I briefly had a Lexmark Z33 printer, but moved to a Lexmark X83. This doesn't look like the problem but I'd love to get rid of this error.]

[Based on the timing, I think this is where the problem begins. The devices I have hanging off the USB port are my printer (X83), video capture device - these have been around for a couple of years. Also my camera hangs off the USB port - a more recent acquisition]

[I have no idea what this does, although I just installed the drivers (Canon) for my camera over the Xmas break]

[None of these error messages appear when doing safe networking]

Well, sometimes just writing it down helps the old brain to troubleshoot things. After I logged off and left my computer, I thought a bit more. I then got back on and checked on WIA service and what it was for. I suspect that this got setup when I did my camera.

I switched the service from Automatic to Manual and rebooted. Voila - that solved the slow logon problem quite well. Since the camera isn't always attached, I'll have to play with this configuration to see whether this new environment will suit my needs.

    Cheers, Eric
