    Hello,

I was wondering is there away to speed up my Internet. I do the normal cleaning, I just ran ccleaner, but my Internet is still slow. The little icon in the taskbar says 100.0mbps but when I download something, it will only go as high as 46.6mbps and drop, slow or sometimes fast to where it seems I have lost connection. Computer is XP home sp2. Internet is thru Linksys wireless router, and I have Charter High speed Internet...just that it doesn't seem so high speed when downloading. Any help would be great.

100Mb/sec. is the capacity of the network to exchange loacl traffic if you have more tham one computer.

You download "Speed" is depending on your ISP contract and the quality of the lines leading to your house.

May be this can Help, Optimizing & Measuring the "Speed" of Internet Connection.

try checking your bandwidth first. it's free for 3 times/month at this place.

It is not a 100% accuracy, but it will compare your internet speed with others.
I personally have charter as ISP, and our speed is good. Not the fastest, but as good as it gets for cable connection.
Maybe you have a bad signal between your PC and linksys wireless router?
Try using wired connection from the router and see if it helps.

As cat5e pointed out, 100mbps is the speed at which you can transfer data between computers on the same router (actually I've noticed that sometimes the windows wireless connection manager erroneously shows 100mbps. I don't know what causes this, but based on the other data you provided, I speculate the actual speed of your router is 54mbps.) Also as cat5e correctly pointed out, you actual connection speed will depend on what sort of package you have from your ISP. For a personal high-speed system in the US 5mbps is fairly typical and over 10 is (as far as I know) unheard of. A quick googling of your ISP shows that their standard package is 3mbps.

But that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do. The best advice I can offer is to update the driver on your computer's wireless card. To do this, right click on the my computer icon and the click Properties. From here click the Hardware tab and then click device manager. You should see something that looks like this:
    http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/device_manager.jpg
Under network adapters right click on your wireless card (the entry should contain the number 802.11) and then select update driver. If you do not have the most current driver, windows will install it for you.

Beyond that, anything that I can recommend will involve hardware changes and/or moving the router or pc.

    hope that helped.
