    Morning Geeks....

I've a little problem. Brought my pc out of standby this morning, and up comes the 'found new hardware wizard', looking for drivers for the SM Bus Controller.

I'm at a loss...... I haven't installed ANYTHING on here for absolutely yonks....

Only thing I ran on it yesterday was AIDA32 - a colleague at work had recommended as i've been having problems with it running slow when I initially start up. (don't know what to do with the information it provides thou).....

I've searched your threads but didn't find anything in titles - bet it's there somewhere thou....

    Any ideas anyone?

To fix this, simply re-install the chipset drivers for your mainboard.

thanks for responding bj, but i'm a complete novice on a pc, can you tell me what/how/where? I don't have any disks for the pc - it was preloaded, and somewhere along the way, i've lost the one disk I did have (which i'm sure only held things like encarta on). Am i right in thinking that AIDA32 will identify what motherboard i've got and can then search for drivers on the net?

Thanks for taking the time to help...

i've found silicon integrated system as a name for the chipset for motherboard. Is that what I needed to identify to get the right drivers?

I must sound like a right pleb....

    (i am ;-))

First, I would attempt to "update drivers" by clicking properties in device manager. Its possible Windows may load it for you, if not try letting windows updates get it for you. It should prompt you when you choose update drive to access the internet.

Try this and let me know.

hmmm, I allowed the wizard to 'connect to windows update' to help me find the driver, but it's not helping, just telling me to load the CD that came with the hardware. Is there something i'm not doing right?

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

So let me get this straight, you chose to let windows updates connect to the net and find the drivers for you and it prompts for a CD, correct?

  8. Flooz

    Flooz Private First Class

Yeah. just to make sure i'm doing this right, went to device manager, right clicked on update driver - up pops the wizard - i chose 'allow windows update .... (whatever it says) - but it only seems to be searching for a cd.

What i don't understand either is why this 'found new hardware' popped up. but could this be the reason why my pc has been really 'lousy' lately?

  9. Flooz

    Flooz Private First Class

sorry, slightly wrong, it's just searching my pc...

but it can't find a driver. "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

If I need to download from the net, how do I know what/where to get it?

    I really appreciate this....

    1) Locate the SM Bus Controller in device manager. Right click on Properties, select the Driver Tab.

    2) Now click on Update Driver, allow windows to connect to the internet and be sure the next is set on Install the software automatically.

    Let me know!:)

thank you bj, that seems to have dealt with the driver issue (i think, i've had to switch to another pc, coz the other one takes about 15 mins to 'get started', so it obviously wasn't that what was causing the slow start up speed, but at least i should have the correct drivers as it asked.

I've not a clue why it takes so long to start up, it's ok once it's got there.... i just have to only restart when absolutely necessary. Am thinking of buying a new one soon anyway.

Have you been checked for spyware/virus infections as this would slow you down by far.

Again, make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

Other than these few ActiveX controls, I dont really see much. Could be several reasons why its slow on startup. First thing that comes to mind now days is spyware. Glad it wasnt!

Well I guess thats it unless you want to continue to finding out why its slow on startup.

It's ok, thanks for all your help. As far as the slow start up goes, i think i've pretty much given up trying to find out. It works fine once it gets started, and as i've said, i've got the perfect excuse to buy a more up to date one now. I don't use this one much, mainly as a server for networking my laptop, and to stop the fighting when 2 teenagers want to access the net.

I'm going to do a clean install on here when i've got some spare time, so maybe that'll fix it all anyway.

I really do appreciate you lot at major geeks, you always help when i shout.

    You do a great job!

The reason I asked is because its set to startup on your system. If you do NOT know this I would uninstall it.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HelioBarXP] C:\PROGRA~1\HELIOB~1\HELIOB~1.exe start
