    Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro. My C: drive is 34.9 GB, very small. For that reason, I added an external hard drive (149.0 GB) and an internal hard drive (250 GB). My operating system is on my C: drive, and security programs and everything else are stored either on my F: drive (external) or E: drive (internal). Though I have not stored programs on my C: drive, it is nevertheless 33% full (and this after a restore to factory conditions less than a week ago). Is the reason my C: drive is filling up because programs that I am using which are stored on either the F: drive or the E: drive download to my C: drive in order to run?

I am trying to keep my C: drive as uncluttered as possible, only operating system and updates (that is why I have the two other drives to store my programs). It does not seem to be working, though. My C: drive is filling up. Why is this? How can I achieve my goal? Thank you for any explanations you can give me.

Exactly. All programs will create folders on C: for temp files and other things they need to run. Windows also is constantly creating files and folders it needs to do it's thing. Now, the question is: why are you stil using a 40gb hard drive? Why not install Windows to the 250gb internal and retire the old small drive?

    Hi

Could be a few things causing this.

Do this Basic computer maintenance everyone should do

Clean out all bar last good System Restore( steps on this at bottom of guide Remove Restore Points) point as these take up space, and then reset the used space lower Guide on this (just the Disk Space for System Restore part)

Disable Hibernate as it takes up a few GB, can do this in Control Panel > power options > hibernate tab and untick.

Try finding out what files and folders are using most of the space and this app TreeSize (are others but that one only jumped into my head at this moment but will do the job) will help (dont delete anything unless you know what it is)

Do you do alot of p2p downloading and if so double check where the download folder is set to.

If have ipod or iphone do you have a very large collection of music in itunes?

Thank you dlb and Halo for your responses. I will perform Halo's cleaning steps and see how my disk space is affected. Then I will consider moving my OS to the 250 GB hard drive.

    Again, thank you very much.
