So...my comp caught a virus (prnet.tmp) which turned off auto updates and shutdown my antivirus software blah blah blah. It then crashed windows so it only showed a black screen which caused me to have to hard shutdown.

In the aftermath of the hard shutdown my windows xp professional will not boot. It goes through bios and gets to the "Your computer unexpectedly shutdown.... safe mode, etc etc last known good etc" page.

Upon selecting safe mode w/ networking or any other selection it will quickly list out the boot files and other windows files before stopping and then simply restarting.

I inserted a windows xp disc and entered windows recovery where I:
    - deleted some of the virus components
    - ran chkdsk /r
    - ran bootcfg /rebuild

Upon each thing tried it does the same thing...I need a few files on the computer for an upcoming wedding so If you have any suggestions besides reformat and try again...It would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming this is a desktop, you may have to remove the hard drive and slave it to another computer and copy your important data and files and then do a clean install.

On that note, which I was considering, do you guys know anything about IDE to USB converters? I have heard of them and was wondering if they would be an option to copy info onto my laptop without having to slave the drive to another comp.

I have never had a windows problem I couldn't at least get back to functional....so frustrating!

Thanks for your help, guys! I am going to slave the drive and try to access it that way then wipe it. I was overdue for a format anyways.
