Do you use somesofts for tune up your internet. If you remember the filename, you can sarch them in your HDD

it depends on what browser you are using
if you have IE you may have to reset your internet settings. and I'm not even sure if that would help.
the only other option is to add a value to your registry setting a specific location for downloaded files.

    (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Download Directory REG_SZ "C:\My Files"< or wherever you want them to go)
however if you have never edited your registry, I don't advise this. and ALWAYS back up your registry before making any changes.

if you use firefox there is a place in tools, options, downloads to change it. :)

"Do you mean the button that says "Close this dialog box when download completes" "

-No,it said something like "allways ask before downloading files from the internet"

as a result of checking this box i cannot choose which file to download too and whether i open file or save to disk.

i am using IE Version 6.0.2800.1106
sorry i didnt give u full details i should have thought...

you can get CCleaner in the downloads section from what I found there is an option to reset the download directory so this may help. as far as IE itself, there is no such option so you'll pretty much have to use a third party app. :)

I have been using ccleaner (which i found on this site) for about 6 months now? and its been brilliant, made a big difference to my computer and i love it !

unfortunately it doesnt seem to have this feature, maybe because im on win-2000 and its a different version?

oh well,i appreciate the help is there anything else i can try?

actually before you do that you may just be able to repair Ie
there is an option in add remove programs if you click on internet explorer there will be an option to either repair or remove it..(or at least there used to be)
see if you have that. doesnt hurt to try.

Well i wanted to try removing IE completely and reinstalling but IE does not show up in "start-settings-control panel-add/remove programs",i also tried using the "uninstall programs" feature in ccleaner to no avail...

Im pretty sure i installed IE through windows update so maybe its integrated ?
its such an annoying problem im sorry for the hassle if u cant help me anymore i understand and i guess ill just have to live with it till i can find a way of uninstalling ie

It's nothing to worry about, that just means anytime you try to download an executable it'll ask if you really want to.
which is not a bad thing at least you won't unintentionally install something
