"smart Device Is Bad" Message, Seems Doubtful

I've gotten the "SMART device is bad, backup and replace" message the last three or four times I've rebooted my system. I understand this to mean that my hard drive is failing, and should be backed up and replaced.
However, I scanned the drive with chkdsk this evening and found no errors. I'm also not really seeing any other errors that would point to this. I've also seen claims online that the SMART device message can be triggered by other issues, such as ventilation or power supply. I purchased this system in May and it has seen moderate use and been treated fairly well. A laptop, but used mostly as a desktop for work, gaming, browsing and streaming. It generally stays docked to a older Vizio TV, which has had conflicts with some game apps, but seems to work OK otherwise. I have received periodic error messages about the PC charging too long, so I unplug it for a while if that comes up. I did move into a new home about the time I first started seeing the "SMART device is bad" message in early December, so it occurred to me that could be a factor if there's an underlying electrical supply issue.

Looking for help to make sure my hard drive isn't failing, fix it if it is, or repair whatever is wrong and stop getting these messages if it's not.

This is a ROG Zephyrus M16 GU603HE-G-603HE (gaming laptop)
    11th Gen Intel Core i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz
    16.0 GB RAM (15.7 usable)
64-bit operating system, x64 based processor
Operating with Windows 11 Home, V22h2, installed 10/6/2022, OS build 22621.963

Hard drive is 453 GB, 153 GB of which are free. Not currently running with files compressed.
(Also, very secondary, but I'd welcome some advice on managing this relatively small hard drive to free up more space, such as altering virtual memory, compressing files, etc.)

Help much appreciated. Have always had great luck with Major Geeks over more than a decade with everything from rootkits to failed system upgrades.
