My wife is into smileys, email stationary, and such. Kind of silly, but all of those flashing smileys are quite charming. I can see the unsuspecting impulsive happy-go-lucky average computer user downloading and installing them. I told her her to wait until I did some research

Anyway, does anyone if smileycentral takes over the computer when the smileys are downloaded and installed?

Thanks for any advice or warnings.

Time to explain spyware. Everything is called spyware if it tracks what you do. Often times, a company needs to track for statistical purposes and its not a bad thing and is normally anonymous. What is important is two things.

1: Does the company have a privacy policy. In this case, it does: http://www.funwebproducts.com/privacy/

    " Web Products Privacy Policy
We do not sell, rent or trade any personally identifiable information you provide when using the Fun Web Products Websites, which are located at www.smileycentral.com, www.funwebproducts.com, www.popswatter.com, www.mymailstamp.com, www.spin4dough.com, www.mymailsignature.com, www.mymailstationery.com, and www.cursormania.com (collectively "The Web Sites").
We do not collect any personally identifiable information about you (such as your name or email address) when you use the Web Sites unless you specifically decide to provide such information in order to enhance your experience or connection with your use of any software distributed from the Web Sites.
If you choose to provide us with an email address, we will not send an email to you unless you specifically request an email response to a customer service inquiry or contact is required in order to protect someone's safety or to enforce our Terms of Service. You are not required to provide an email address to use the Websites.
When you visit the Websites, we may place a small text file -- called a "cookie" -- on your computer that allows us to identify your Web browser. We use cookies to improve the quality of our service, and to store your preferences and settings. Importantly, a cookie does not allow us to obtain any personally identifiable information (such as your real name and address) unless you have specifically provided such information when using the Web Sites or any service of software distributed from the Web Sites.
If any of the Websites or Fun Web Products, Inc. is ever sold or all or substantially all of the assets relating to a Web Sites or Fun Web Products, Inc. are transferred to another entity, we will transfer the information you have provided (such as any stored preferences or toolbar settings) to the acquiring entity in order to ensure continuity of your service.
We recognize and welcome our obligation to comply with the law and this policy is subject to that obligation. We will, therefore, disclose information, including cookies, in response to a request from law enforcement officials or as otherwise required by law, or if we believe it is necessary to protect someone's safety, or enforce our Terms of Service. If we decide to materially change this privacy policy, we will prominently post those changes on this page. If you have any questions about this statement, feel free to contact us at privacy@help.funwebproducts.com. "

2: Do you trust this companies privacy policy? Most are legit, but theres a few snakes out there.

We had some concerns about that as an ad here, but we run it because we believe it to be safe. Some of those smilies are awesome and I got a kick out of it myself.

I am very falmilar with spyware. I guess I should have just asked specifcally. I could not definitively tell from your response - you say for the most part, it is not too bad? Don't worry, if if does not work out I will not quote you!

Im saying that you should look for a privacy policy and always read it. In this case, reading that privacy policy, I would have no problem with it.
