My computer has been infected with the smitfraud-c malware. I'm not sure if it's related but I also get hits on Vundo I think it is.

Anyway, I'm trying to run the "Read & RUn me first thread." I got to step 6A and ran into a snag. I can't find the Bitedefender page. I clicked the link and tried to type in the URL. I got page not found on two computers.

I am trying to clean my computer offline, so I have this one to keep track of what I have to do. But, I did reconnect my computer as directed in the thread.

Is there another place to download bitedefender or another program to run instead?

    Thanks.

    Hi

If you get stuck on a section of the guide move on to the next, but do tell use ay error mesages that you get with steps that cannot be run like Bitdefender?

the other online scan is panda as listed, try that.

But do continue and attach the logs you can get as that will help start the removals process.

OK, I finished the tasks listed on the read and run first thread.

As I posted originally, I could not get the Bitedefender to run.

While going thru the steps I noticed I installed HJT wrong. So I redid the installation and reran all the steps again from where it was suppose to be ran.

For some reason when I was directed to run the Panda Activescan for the second time my computer keeps locking up. This is the first time I ever got the blue screen on this one.

I'm attaching the logs from HJT, Getrunkey and Shownew.

I am still seeing the windows opening on their own. When Panda was running it did find spyware and hacking tools before the computer stopped running.

I'm really hoping I don't have to do a complete system reload. All of my system disks are packed out and I won't be able to get them for at least two months.

    Thanks.

I tried to run Panda again.

It says I have a problem with a BAD_POOL_HEADER and it is stopping:
    0x00000019 (0x00000020,0xE17A6660,0xE17A6660,0x0C000F0)

It then dumps the physical memory. I wonder if I did something during one of the scans that I shouldn't have.

Where is the requested log from CounterSpy?

Is your copy of Spyware Doctor a paid or free trial version?

    Let's start some fixes.

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
The above is just a beginning to your fixes. You have a lot of problems to fix. So don't expect it to be perfect yet! ;)

Here is the copy of the Counterspy log. I missed that I was suppose to attach it.

The Spyware Doctor is the free trial version.

I'm away from my computer right now and wont be back for a couple of weeks. I'll downloaded the combofix before I left and will run it when I get back.

Do I run the Shownew, HJT and Getrunkey in Safe mode?

Then I would suggest uninstalling it unless you are going to buy it.

Okay! Just attach the log here when you can.

No! All logs should be from normal boot mode unless specified otherwise in a procedure.

I ran the Combofix program. While it was running McAfee was telling unauthrized programs were trying to change things. So I kept saying to not allow the change. I then realized it may be Combofix so I started allowing the change.

When Combofix was done I tried to rerun in it, in case I prevented something from going like it should. It didn't ask me about the unauthorized programs so I just got the original log file it provided.

I also did the GetRunKey, Shownew and HJT scans. They went a lot faster then the first time I ran them. I put a 2 in the file names so I would have the original logs and the new logs.

Here are the other two files.

I made a mad dash home and just brought my PC here so I can work on it between classes I am taking.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to AFSEGTGF Windows Service
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteAFSEGTGF Windows Service into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vtsqo.dll
    yaywtuv.dll
    winzdn32.dll
    osno.dll
    vtsqo.dll
    dnsersnd.dll
    vblrntlf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vtsqo.dll
    yaywtuv.dll
    winzdn32.dll
    osno.dll
    vtsqo.dll
    dnsersnd.dll
    vblrntlf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vtsqo.dll
    yaywtuv.dll
    winzdn32.dll
    osno.dll
    vtsqo.dll
    dnsersnd.dll
    vblrntlf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Now back at the main Process Explorer window look for the below processes and if found right click on them and select Kill Process.

    C:\WINDOWS\smanager.7.exe

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
    • select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files
it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and

    • choose copy):
    C:\WINDOWS\smanager.7.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\smanager.7.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqo.dll

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot run Windows Explorer and double check to make sure all of the below files were deleted. If not then delete them.
    C:\WINDOWS\smanager.7.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\smanager.7.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqo.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yaywtuv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzdn32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\osno.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqo.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnsersnd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vblrntlf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dskuw.exe

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    OK,

I did all the steps and did have a few errors during the process.

    1. When I opened the window for AFSEGTGF it was already stopped. I checked in both Extended and Standard, they were both stopped.
    2. During the first HJT run it told me to stop AFSEGTGF first. But I continued like you told me.
    3. ProcessExplorer told me: Version of Dbghelp.dll does not support Microsoft Symbol Service.
    4. I did not find Iexplore.exe while running processexplorer.
    5. While running HJT for the second time I looked at the first two digits, i.e. o2 and the file name; the string in the center was different on a few of them.
    6. When I double clicked Fixme.reg it gave me an error: File not a registery script, can only import binary registration files. I resaved the file to be sure I did it the way you said.
    7. On reboot I found three files and could not delete two of them: winzd32.dll - access was denied and dskuw.exe - file was being used

I still don't have the computer hooked to the internet. I was going to wait unitl I get it cleaned before trying to connect it again. So I have not disabled system restore yet.

Here are the logs after it was all done.

You ignored part of my instructions that was is bold red print!
    Code:
[B][COLOR=#ff0000]Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up[/COLOR][/B]

Are you sure you saved it exactly as written? No blank lines above the REGEDIT4 line and did you include the REGEDIT4 line? Based on your ShowNew log the fixME.reg file is too small which indicates you left something out. Save it again propery.

That means you did not properly Stop, Disable, and Delete the NT Service and in fact I see it in your new HJT log which indicates that you may have done something wrong doing those steps. Try again! Make sure to follow them exactly. Don't take any detours and don't do anything that is not requested. Also before repeating those steps, uninstall the CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it and it could be getting in our way. Also try shutting down as much of McAfee as you can before starting the steps again (it could also be getting in the way).

Note: Just incase I did not clearly convey this. You must run the whole procedure over again from beginning to end. It is crucial that the NT service gets Stopped, Disabled, and Deleted and also you must get the fixME.reg patch to work properly.

Does the below service line still show in HJT?

    O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dskuw.exe

If yes, then continue on to the below steps.

    • Click Start, Run. Type msconfig and click OK
    • This will run the System Configuration Utility. When it opens, select the Services tab.
    • Look for the below:
      • AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dskuw.exe
    • Remove the checkmark that allows it to run.
    • Then click Ok and close Sytem Configuration Utility. Do not reboot if it tells you it needs to.
    • Run HiJackThis and place checkmarks next to the following entry:
      • O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dskuw.exe
    • After you have checked the above line, click the Fix checked button.
    • Exit HJT but do not reboot.
    • Run Windows Explorer by right clicking Start and selecting Explore
    • Navigate to the below file and right click on it and select delete
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\dskuw.exe

Were you able to delete the file?

  14. Salty25

    Salty25 Private E-2

I went back and reran the first set of instructions you gave me. I made sure I opened a IE window this time and corrected the registration file.

During the first step in the services window, AFSEGTGF Windows Service was already showing to be stopped. This was in both the extended and standard windows. When I selected startup type to disable it would not stay. I selected it and clicked ok and if I opened it back up it was back on automatic. It did the same thing yesterday when I tried this step.

I did get the fixme patch to work.

I ran HJT and saw the 023 AFSEGTGF Windows Service so I did the second set of steps you gave me.

I got to the file deletion part and was told the file was in use; so I could not delete it.

I'm not skipping any of the steps you gave me, nor am I adding anything. The only thing I would think of as me adding is when I was in the services window I checked both the extended and standard tabs for the AFSEGTGF service.

But that window is showing the service as not running but HJT says it is in the very next step.

    Here are the new logs.

That's strange. Your GetRunKey log just attached shows the service disabled. Let's do this another way, but first fix the below line with HJT:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzdn32 - winzdn32.dll (file missing)

Now goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_12
    Outerinfo

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt please attach that log here.
    • Also attach new logs from ShowNEw and HijackThis

When I booted up my computer to do the tasks I got a different message. It said something about my System Config Utility is in diagnostic mode or selective startup. It said I needed to choose normal startup mode. It then opened a window for me to select it or some other options.

I fixed the line in HJT like you said and started deleting the programs. When I got to outerinfo I got an error. It said the program may have been uninstalled and it was going to remove it from the add/remove list.

So I ran Avenger and here is the file from it and HJT and Shownew.

I got the message on the System Config Utility when the computer rebooted after running Avenger.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

It seems to be running a lot better now. Back to what seems like its old speed of loading things. I haven't connected it to the internet yet, want to be sure it's completely clean so I don't download more junk.

Here is the new HJT log.

If this is it I am totally in your debt.

Thanks for the WONDERFUL help in getting this done.

Any tips or advice on how to prevent this again? I know I need to purchase a new McAfee to update that program. I have been relying on my router for a firewall; should I purchase a program for that?

    Thanks.

    You're welcome.

Covered in my final steps given below! You will also see in the provided link, many free alternatives to using McAfee. It's your choice what you prefer, but the free tools do work quite well.

You should still have a software firewall.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

It appears to be running great now.

I can't hook it up to the internet here so I will check it online when I get home this weekend.

I completed the final steps and will download and install what I need to keep my computer safe. Including creating an account to work on instead of using the admin account.

One last question: Should I do anything about the system config utility? Should I leave it in diagnostic mode or put it in normal startup mode?

    Thanks again.

How can I make these changes to the registery without screwing something up? I guess I had one more question after all. confused

You don't need to! You don't have MS Java installed. And you already have the current version of Sun Java installed.

    OK,

But what about the system config utility, should I leave it in diag mode or change it to normal?

  24. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

If you did the steps in message # 17 (and your log in msg 18 shows you did), then you should not be in diag mode. At any rate, as requested in the READ ME, you should always be in normal startup mode ( unless you are doing temporary debugging ).
