Smoking and Major Geeks

Now in my six months here at Major Geeks I have seen a few flaming threads which is one of the many reasons that MG is my Home Page.

The one topic that seems to evoke flaming is smoking this has always amazed me as the Avatar for MG shows the Major sucking on a stooge/cigar.

So because this is "Flaming Sunday", the "imp" in me, made me post this query

When I first started smoking I thought it made me look cool, then as I got older, I realized I was right......it did make me look cool.

You know what bothers me more than people smoking
SECONDHAND smoke
Even in a smoking section, the smoke still gets to my lungs
I say ban smoking for good
Even if that means more booze consumption for all

 

I quit 13 months ago after 35 years of at least 40 per day. I have no problem with other people smoking around me but the reeason I quit? Next year in the UK you will not be allowed to smoke in Pubs (bars).................. I will not have anybody tell me where I can or can not have a cigarette!!!!!!

I've had cancer twice and I don't care if people smoke around me. At work I go out with the boss and the assistent boss and talk to them while they smoke.

 

They wanted a smoking ordiance locally for clubs and restaurants.
I suggested that every one must display one of two signs on every entrance, smoking allowed or no smoking.
Smoking bans without sales bans are bogus.

Smoke em if you got em.
If not stand up wind.

 

They banned smoking over here in clubs, pubs, public playgrounds, beaches, 3 meters from the entrance of any public building and anywhere food or drink is served. Pubs and clubs are being hit the hardest and are loosing a lot of business

 

Honestly, this is the first time I've ever seen a "debate" about smoking on this board. And it all started because someone posted that it's "always" a hot topic.

Meh, whatever. I smoke sometimes, sometimes I don't. Depends on how my life is going at the moment. I don't, however, smoke in people's houses or cars who request that I don't, nor do I smoke while other people are eating (unless we're sitting at a bar and I was there first...bar stools are fair game for getting smoke in your face). I also often sit in the non-smoking section of a restaurant, and have often dined with people who don't smoke, so I wait until I get outside.

Private businesses are more than welcome to ban smoking. It means I won't go there, but they're more than welcome to do so. Government, on the other hand, should stay the hell out of it, with the exception of regulating government buildings.

thats what i think too. you know down there in FL they tried (i dont know if they did it or not) to ban smoking on the beach lol i will never under stand why the Gov thinks they can control us like that
if someone asks me not to smoke in there car or house i wont but if i am in my own car i will smoke away same as in my house.
i think it was NY that banned smoking in side of stores but what you think happen when the people started to go out side and smoke where you think the smoke went too? right for any Window AC units and open windows. right?

 

I quit smoking almost 4 years ago . . . haven't had a smoke since. However, I have increased my alcohol consumption to compensate . . .

Can't remember where, one of those fun piccy sites somewhere. Was appropriate, got it for a friend who chain smokes, and I posted it on another forum claiming it was her keyboard!

I told people the truth after a while, I'm just wicked, not evil...

 

I smoke, but not in my house, just in other peoples houses.

 

Smoking is already banned in most indoors, in Queensland, already. Thank God.

I gave up 3.5 years ago (for the umpteenth time). Wasn't the hardest thing I've ever done, like some say. That came when my husband gave up smoking 10 months ago and I restrained from strangling him the first week

 

They proved years ago that diesel fumes caused cancer, why dont they address that, big busines dont get picked on, the tobbaco companies wouldnt pad the pockets of the lobbiests, when the nascar cup series was no longer called The Winston Cup, i knew we were in trouble. ed

I do struggle to take seriously the rules of any government which profits from something that can cause illness. In addition to smoke from cigarettes, there is the threat to health from the toxic emissions from cars. I drove home in heavy traffic today and the fumes from cars (even those fitted with catalytic converters) were terrible. Benzine, one of the ingredients of petrol, is highly carcinogenic, and I dread to think how many cigarettes I'd have to smoke to feel as ill as I did when I got home tonight.

A smoking ban in all workplaces in BC. A separate smoking room is allowed in bars, with it's own ventilation system, but the staff are limited on how long they can be in there, if at all. The reason? Worker's Compensation claims down the road. Staff are required to work in a hazardous environment.
I don't buy the pollution angle. If you live in a polluted area, why would you add to what goes in your lungs? I work in an automotive shop where we've had sales staff try to smoke in the shop in the winter. They use the same argument as we're pushing them out the door. I believe all smoking should take place out side, even at your own house.
