    Hi:
My ISP has recently added a SSL requiremant to his SMTP server. I use a security program on my computer to send security emails. It does not support SSL so it can no longer send emails. I see two options (besides a new security program):
    1) Sign up for a free email service with direct POP/SMTP access that does NOT require SSL. Does anyone know of such a service??? (e.g. gmail is out because they require SSL. Yahoo may have such a service with their pay service, but that is a pay service). Any ideas?
    2) I believe there are free SMTP server packages which one can install on his computer. Hopefully I could direct the security program to access this package and solve the problem this way. I have never worked with such a program, can anyone recommend a free SMTP server package to solve this problem?
    3) Any other possible solutions??

    Thanks, John

You could try using this program - Free SMTP Server.

Just curious, what is this security program that you are using? If you may tell, of course. I am not insisting.

Thanks for the reply. I am using an older version of Home Seer and it works great. I purchased an upgrade for it but I haven't installed it yet. In reading the associated forums when the upgrade first came out there were many "upgrade" horror stories and the new version won't necessarily do much for me, so I have been leaving well enough alone. Hopefully things upgrade more smoothly now. Actually, I am not even sure that the upgraded version will solve my SSL problem either.

Regarding the program "Free SMTP Server"; have you ever known anyone who has used this package, and if so were they happy with it? I believe I found it earlier on download dot com but something hung up my computer when I tried to read about it. Perhaps I have a security or cookie setting set too tight for them. Anyway, I was able to download it via the link you furnished and I will most likely install it and give it a try after I receive any responses from this reply that I am presently writing.
    Thanks, John

I have used this freeware program myself about a year ago, when I had a need for it. I don't really have anything special to say about it. It just worked for me, that's it :)

    Hi:
I installed the program you suggested only to find out that my ISP has also decided to block port 25 on residential accounts (any account using dynamic IP). I am presently working my way up the chain of command trying to get then to change that. This ISP is very concerned about spammers and this is just another step in their battle, but unfortunately it also has consequences for the legitimate user.

Any idea as to how I can make that program work without port 25? I imagine that email servers only listen on port 25 and the secure ports (i.e. those that require SSL). I wonder if anybody makes a free SSL encoder?

    Thanks, John

Thanks, I just tried port 587 and the message at the bottom of the screen says "waiting for connectiion on port #587; using DNS server:192.168.0.1" Also, there are no "active connections" listed.
I just talked to the ISP again and he said that port 587 is not blocked - but port 587 is reserved for TLS encryption and if the message is not sent with TLS encryption the server will reject it, so that is apparently what is happening. Unfortunately the "Free SMTP Server" program does not provide TLS encryption.

Any additional thoughts? Are there any other ports which might support un-encrypted SMTP?
    Thanks, John

    Try port 2525.

Nope, when trying port 2525 that one also just sits there and says "waiting for connection on port #2525". It apparently isn't going to pass SMTP.

Does anyone know of a free SMTP server that has a SSL or TLS output?

Or does anyone know of a free program that converts SMTP to a SSL or TLS output?

    Thanks again, John
