Use Disk Cleanup. You will find it on the disk Properties. While there be sure to also run the cleanup of system files.

when you open disk cleanup it will scan for junk files and other stuff then you see a pop up box at the bottom you will see a button which says clean up system files click that and it reload the box and then you can delete windows.old folder

I think I will have to use Lenux live of some flavor to clean them Windows keeps choking on their attributes and file names, even though it is a totally dead dirctory. AI's arem't always smart. Does the same thing with cleanup.
