Well if Simon Cowell is over in the USA, then I'm all for it as he will be leaving us alone in the UK for a while ;)

Its just another attempt for the shows producers and celeb judges to make bucket loads of cash from wanna-be singers who will generally only last one No.1 song and then fade into obscurity!

Let's put it this way, there is too much pride, ego and arrogance that get's in the way for those that do not have the singing star talent or singing talent. There needs to be more humility and acceptance of constructive criticism. :)

Watched it, still love it. I truly enjoy watching the typical "im wonderful" kids of today being stomped on and finally realizing they aint no more special then the next guy.

Quite impressive for me was when a local Syracuse girl got up there and thought she would be embarassing and she blew all 4 judges away... And shes smoking hot too.

It's entertaining, but it seems a bit scripted. There are a few really good singers, but the ones that suck...c'mon, they can't honestly believe that they're any good!

It's always the ones that suck the most that are the most cocky and think they're the best, and they end up being horrible! They're funny to watch, but I think they are coached a bit by the shows producers.

And the other thing that bugs me is, why does everyone hate Simon? He is the only one who gives his honest opinion. Thats why these people are there...to be judged! The other judges just look at each other to see what the other one says, and then jumps on the band wagon. That one girl who was asked to bring out her husband wasn't even that good, yet they gave it to her because she had a sob story about having to sell her wedding ring!

I see this as being like every other reality show. It's not based on peoples singing ability, but rather pleasing the masses and being "PC". Let's see, they've got their rock band singer, their single mom, their gay guy, their fat guy, they'll have their country singer wannabee, their super religious chick, etc. It just seems too "manufactured".

And that seacrest guy, man somebody needs to kick his ass.

But what the hell... I'll be watching it

my wife likes it, so we watched it. The last chic(k) that was on there was just nutz... omg.. I laughed so hard I pulled a muscle in my stomach. That was the funniest stuff I've seen in weeks. I can't believe people put themselves through that. The best part of that show has to be the prelim's because after they choose good people , who cares; It's not funny then.

Steve I dont hate Simon Cowell, I actually think what he says is bang on the money BUT he's on UK TV ( X-Factor finished a few weeks back... what a load of B/lox ... funniest thing on that was the nutty girl Rowenta[sic] because the eventual winner Steve is no more than a good pub or cruise ship singer ) or in the press all the damm time, his relationship hitting the rocks is our latest headline news :( and so what!!! its not front page news, relationships breakup all the time, he needs to get back to the job of finding those musicians that are good and will last longer than the 15min of fame and he did find some great artists.

And as you say if the contestants cannot take the comments, then they are wanting a career in the wrong industry...

I agree Kodo.. after the funnies are gone its dull as sin and I actually feel for the genuinely top groups/artists that are trying to enter the business and see some manufactured fly-by-night get a years contract and semi fame.

    /wednesday rant! ;)

Interesting read... Thought I would share my thoughts as a comparison.

I dont think it is scripted. If you look around, at least in the USA, a lot of kids have been brought up to believe they can do or be anything and that they are special and this show highlights the poor parenting skills they grew up under. They have been told they are special, rather then be pushed to be extraordinary and you are seeing only one example of the real world these people are now discovering. Keep in mind, these kids are as young as 16 and this year as old as only 28, which is older then before, but on average the median age appears to be 21. One word comes to mind. Naive.

I think Simon is awesome too, but with the other judges (Paula is too nice and Randy can be brutally honest politely when needed) I think your correct, but the mix of personalities is dead on.

I had not considered the PC thing, here is my thought I believe I saw happen over the years. They wanted all pop singers year 1. Simon was the worst in this area. Then they saw the popularity of the rock star, the red headed kid last year and the other kid who had a funny dance but not so great a singer. I loved that kid, he was awesome on the show and had talent. I think they take people who they think are different, but have potential, and give them a chance they might normally not simply because its been proven that the non pop singers if not for anything else always prove to be entertaining. The rock singer this year proved that. He actually had pop potential considering his background and I for one, think it will be awesome, as it has in the past, to see if he can adapt different music. I think that makes it fun to choose people with varying styles and backgrounds.

Seacrest seems ok to me, I dont know why everyone hates him, he seems to be a good host? I cant help but watch it, I want to see how the first round goes, that always clears out a lot of people. I see Gene Simmons will be guest starring as will many others, so it should be fun..

Speaking of which, I thought Gene Simmons was doing a Queer Eye For The Straight Guy episode?

Ok, thats enough typing for me today.

she got mad at me because I didn't wake her up from her nap when it came on

how the hell was i supposed to know when it came on? The show can be funny, at times, but most of all it hurts. . .all the spoiled kids are tone def as hell. . .
but some not as bad as that hidden car cam show on MTV(I don't rebember the name of it)

one show that I do think is funny as crap is the one with Flava'Flave and Brgette Neilson on VH1. . .'Strange Love' . I am not much for reality t.v. (I get enough reality) especially "celeb" reality, I mean get over yourself
    but that just to funny.
and I cannot believe I thought she was hot back in the day .

I hate and stay away from any TV show that can turn a complete loser like William Hung into a media superstar for being extremely horrible, wth is up with that? Pathetic! I wanna beat that egotistic punk Simon along with the producers of that retarded show.....

How about Fear Factor? Since when watching someone eat a live dragonfly is a scary thing? My kinda 'Fear factor' would be like getting dropped (almost buttnaked) in the middle of harlem with a sign on me same as the one Bruce Willis had in DieHard with a Vengeance. :p

I gotta go withn the prelims too. My wife watches it religiously, but I only like the people making fools of themselves, when they can't believe they didn't make the cut. My wife's the expert,m and she says the best idol show ever was last years Canadian Idol. The final 6 or 7 did a song together and they all played instuments (fiddle mandolin guitars and keys) I was impressed.

That's the spirit!! A long reply!:)

seems like i'm not the only American Idol nut! :D

I know who u were talking about (the red haired kid, dancing dude, etc). I know all their names. The red haired kid was John Stevens, dancing guy is John Peter Lewis (i really liked his performances too!), there was also Jasmine Trias, Camil something, Amy something, Jennifer Hudson, Lotoya London, Diana Degarmo(sp?), Fantasia (of course) and some others i cant remember. And i DIDN'T even have to google the for the names!!

As for simon, i dont think anything is wrong with him. He's brutally honest, that's all.

And maybe the producers did have some tricks to make the show more interesting. But i dont think it is "manufactured." Sure, they pick out the weirdest and most "william hung" like auditionsto show on TV among the 100,000 or more auditions. But, it's the auditions that are the funniest (and the weirdest)

My favorite part of the show is when there's only the top 12 left. (i dont think that it's dull like Halo said). They are very talented people and 'inspiring'.:)

Sadly in the last few years the TV schedule and new and ingenious programs ( CSI for one ) have disapeared for REALITY TV and we are hooked.... what ever happened to good comedys, dramas etc etc they are disapearing for shows like Idol whatever, Big Brother and various shows on how to clean, renovate, sell, buy, decorate your house or garden, a multitude of junk and antique selling shows, cookery programs.. and sad thing on UK tv is that these shows tend to all follow each other in the schedule or if you flip channels you will hit one of the above.

I dont want to see these programs disapear as i enjoyed the fly on the wall Osbournes series but I dont want to see every famous or z list star do the same ( eg. thingy Simpson!!? ), I just want to see programming/schedules a bit more varied, but while we are hooked and the TV companies and the likes of Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller etc are making masses of money from these shows they are not going to stop.

even as far back as 2003 when all these show were becoming popular the NY Times ran this article http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/25/entertainment/main537964.shtml very interesting if you read it all.

I LOVE American Idol! I especially love Simon! Yes, he's harsh and brutally honest, but that's part of the draw for me! To see Simon....lol. I also really enjoy the auditions that are showing now. Man, they are HALARIOUS! It amazes me that some of these contestants who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket truly think they are great!!

I must add, too, that it's been pretty cool to see a couple of fellow North Carolinians make it so far in the competition (Fantasia!!!!! and *cough* Clay Aiken).

Maybe I'm just easily entertained......but I do so love that show!!

    Have a beautiful day, y'all! :)

I only like to watch the first part of it, with the rejects (it's hilarious..) and then when they narrow it down to the final 10. I'm not crazy about the actual competition though. It's not that I don't think they're talented (cause some of them DO have nice voices) but it seems like such a quick and easy (cheap, if you will) way to get your 15 minutes of fame. I do congratulate Kelly Clarkson though, for staying on top. She has a beautiful voice, and she seems like a sweet, humble person. But the other year at an award's show, she was pushed into a category with "her" song "A Moment Like This" with other bands who actually made their own songs and music. It's not the people that I don't like, it's the companies...they will do anything for money. I mean c'mon people, Ashlee Simpson? The only reason they signed her was because of her sister's fame...
