Hey everyone, Im trying to prepare my box for a second OS. my goals are (1) not to have to boot from a disk every single time I boot but rather I a option from dos as to what system to boot to, (2) decide what type of Linux is best for alll purpose use like mandrake or redhat which are my current preferences for no reason other then there something Ive heard of, (3) I want to maintain my current system preformance and even execute any system tweaks now to my current Winxp that might also improve these two systems, (4) is how to do this with my current hardware I do not wish to invest any money in this eventual switch to Lunix .

THX 4 ahead ov time 4 everyone's ensight in this matter

1: My advice would be to buy Partition Magic. Money well spent. Setup your partitions and use the boot loader that comes with it. You can setup a default boot so the PC loads Windows automatically without intervention, but you can stop it and tell it to load whatever when you want that.

2: As for Linux, I have spent a lot of time and I would avoid RedHat IMHO and use something a bit more user friendly for the home user. My choices would be Mandrake, Suse or Lindows.

3: Not sure what you mean here. Each OS would be independent of each other so any tweaks would only apply to the OS your working on. Your PC does not know or care your dual booting, it only does what its told.

4: I think I covered that in number 1. While you do not want to invest money, buying Partition Magic is worth its weight in gold, and I strongly suggest you do that. While it would cost you 60 dollars in the store, you can buy the same for about one third of that through our shopping engine:
