So who went Vista and was happy?

    I'm considering getting Vista Ultimate.
Just curious as to who got it and who's happy with it, likes it, or hates it?

while i havent used windows vista ultimate extensively, from my uses with it, it isnt all that much. i've found about 2 things that are actual improvements on the operating system, and its likely to have a lot of bugs since it is a new product. IMHO, vista is primarily a visual upgrade and not that much of an operating system upgrade, everything is about eye candy and making it look smooth. my opinion is wait awhile, personally i will probably be waiting about a year to upgrade

The arguments of users that may have used a beta or not ever touched using Vista win the day their Eye Candy remarks speak volumes.

But the review and the Conclusions in Plaphons link are pretty accurate, but Vista is not OS X and never will be, buying into Apple will cost some serious $$££, not same with PC?

Nevermind, cannot be bothered finishing with my user experience which is near 18 months of using it..... all I will say is try it yourself and make your own mind up, as all this I hate MSFT and Vista is tiersome, kinda like the I hate Intel poop that filled the net until Intel released Core 2 Duos and now they are the dogs! I notice a few who dissed Intel on here who now use Intels!!!! same will happen in time and doubters will be using Vista, when they actually try it over regurgitating piffle.

I've hear a rumor that Vista is planned to have a 2 year life span, then something else will get released. Dunno if it is true, but I'm inclined to wait and see. M$ seems to follow a pattern (and it will be interesting to see if it holds), they release something that is pretty buggy, clean it up until it is pretty good, then start from scratch and repeat.

Other than those you wont really find concrete info about two projects that one maybe just SP1 for Vista and the other will be Vista's sucessor, search the net for Windows Vienna or Fiji and its all rumours about what they could have as features, I'd guess techbeta testing would start on one of them this year possibly, knowing how the Vista timeframe was, BUT we are kinda going off-topic here.

Its about as big an upgrade as 2k was to XP.

    Thats not altogether small.

Looking at other competitiors, its on track.

Linux distro updates are slight updates. Kernel releases rarely make a huge difference.

Apple point releases are upgrades, too. They haven't gone to a new OS rewrite in 7 years.

My main beef was the price they charged, and the features they removed. That, and I have virtually every feature Vista has and more in the OSes I use.

If you are going to bash something here, you need to be articulate in your response, else you will get pounded on with a hammer. ;)

Is Vista a worthy upgrade from XP? Thats for each user to determine, because mileage will always vary.

Currently using Vista in a triple-boot with XP and Ubuntu.

I like Vista, but honestly haven't given it the acid test of full-time use yet.

I do think it is overall a big improvement over XP, however, and imagine I will slowly migrate to it over the next year or so. :)

I stopped reading after I saw that he upgraded with antivirus installed. Intelligence is apparently not a fine point for everyone.

Look at the points he is complaining about. Sometimes its better to keep your mouth shut, and be thought a fool, than to open it and confirm it.

Only valid point he made imo was the poor hardware error descriptors.

I bet his computer is closer to 5 years old, too, considering I found a BIOS for it dated in 2002.

Complaining about a computer that wouldnt even be a lot of fun on XP, being bad on Vista....priceless.

"I stopped reading after I saw that he upgraded with antivirus installed."

No you didn't, otherwise you wouldn't have an opinion about the "only" valid point he made - you had to read much further to cover all his points

And you don't know that he upgraded with antivirus installed. The instructions probably mean that only the latest version of Kapersky would work with Vista. Even if he did do what you accuse him of, he would have been only following Microsoft's instructions , so whose problem is that, his or the Vista Upgrade package?

"Complaining about a computer that wouldnt even be a lot of fun on XP, being bad on Vista....priceless."

The Vista Upgrade Advisor gave him a clear go-ahead on the basis of certain adjustments. So again, whose fault is it, his or the Upgrade package?

The point here is that if someone as computer literate as this person has difficulties, what is going to happen to the average user?

"Intelligence is apparently not a fine point for everyone."

    Speak for yourself.

Oooh, big man, throwing insults at members.

That makes a fine point of respecting your opinions. :)

I was being sarcastic when I said I stopped reading. I read the whole thing. He complained about his old hardware having issues. Boohoo? This is nothing new, if you do your homework. His sound card should have been researched prior.

The advisor is only that, and advisor. The one for XP wasn't any better. I heard these same tired old whines when XP first came out. Wahwahwah, XP wont run on my old and broke hardware, wahwahwah.

The early birds get the worms. This is no different.

You are right, I assumed about the AV. But seeing how he didnt do his homework about the Pocket PC, didn't meet the reccomended ram requirements, didn't do homework about his sound card, whined about how his old hardware had issues, upgraded instead of clean installed, then cried about it....I figured he probably forgot to remove his antivirus too.

Anyone who relies on an upgrade Advisor to give accurate answers on every hardware and software configuration out there? Laughable!

    Now regarding the average user.

They generally DONT UPGRADE IMMEDIATELY. All the average users I know buy a new computer for each major OS release.

    Speak for myself eh?

    roflmao

At least I have experience with the OSes I bash. This was not a valid article to bash Vista with. Just showed an inexperienced editor trying to sound smart but instead showed his own shortcomings by relying on a single application to tell him what he didn't want to check himself. Try again.

Despite the fact I no longer use it, Vista gave me no issues, past Beta 2. No slowdowns either. It saw all my hardware. My applications worked (that I installed). I had no crashes. It booted fast. It was pretty (my Linux is far prettier).

Its a minor OS upgrade. Its not a complete rewrite. Its hardware heavy. Don't expect your 4 year old hardware to have no issues. Think about it. Hardware from 1997 running Windows XP? roflmao Sure, maybe. With sheer misery.

    This is no different.

For a change, I agree with Adrynalyne on all points made with regards to that article.... On top of all the hardware issues of concern, IMO your asking for trouble if you upgrade any new OS over old software!

The average tradesman will always blame his tools!

I think i would rather visit his blog, than read about pitfalls that dont have to happen!

Articles for and against Vista and upgrading old PCs are a mixed bag, some work some dont, his PC is 4yrs plus old as RDRAM OEM PCs stopped around early 2002 iirc, many many folk say rule of thumb is if its 4yrs old you will have issues, and especially with old soundcards, GFX card and NICs.

for a reporter it seems he did not research this fully as the AXIM issue would have rang alarm bells to its compatability, plus I would have loved him to post a screenshot or listing of his Upgrade Advisor comments as many HW driver issues state "Windows Vista Drivers may not exist for the devices below" Contact manufacturer, so then you, well you'd hope you'd go look for Vista specific drivers for your PC.

I have a similar spec'd PC to his in a custom build P4 2.4ghz 1GB PC800 RDRAM and a Nvidia Ti4400 128mb GFX card, I ran the upgrade advisor and was given some upgrades I needed to do and a fair few drivers that may or may not be available, what did I do.. didnt install Vista on it that would have been too much trouble, rebuilt it yesterday to keep XP on it and use it as test PC, but my main PCs are all now Vista.

I built a New PC for a New OS and do I have issues with it NO, but I spent a month researching parts to make sure all had drivers, I even emailed a few of them to inquire about compatability, only slight issue was Nvidia and the 8800 drivers.

The majority of users that will migrate to Vista will be:

    1. Geeks who know what they are doing and can troubleshoot issues that may arise, the majority of them upgrade HW alot so will most likely have new compatible HW, they complain about Vista but do so with evidence to backup their rants, but they get on with it and overcome.

    2. New users to PCs who will buy a Vista Ready PC or those wanting to upgrade their PC anyway as a natural progression to a faster running system.

    3. Users who think they know more than they actually do and run into trouble due to lack of research and the knowledge to T/shoot the issues that arise, this group will be the most vocal as to blaming the OS.

But I personally do think Microsofts min specs is vastly optomistic.

    VISTA CAPABLE
    800MHz processor
    512Mb memory
    DirectX9 capable graphics processor

I just bought a new Toshiba 17" notebook with Vista installed and am less than impressed... I found it to have hardware compatibility issues with some of my PNP devices BUT moreso, problems with my off the shelf software I use at work acting flaky.

I upgraded to 2gb ram and it helped (and if Toshiba hadn't lied in their product specs - I wouldn't have another 2gb chip collecting dust on the shelf - I'd have 4gb in the machine)

Maybe I am just frustrated in having to set up my new laptop or maybe I'm still bitter about my old Toshiba 3.2x HyperThread notebook that got stolen or maybe Vista SP2 will be the new sliced bread.....

Anyway, I dumped it and went to XP Pro SP2 to find out this "new" machine doesn't support it (well)... so any overachievers who care to look at my thread (search: Audio Driver XP) - I challenge you to figure out the whole toshiba support sucks - make my bios beep go away problem! (THANKS)

First you can't blame your software not working on vista, so thats out of the picture. The software is not working because said manufactor didn't update it. PNP legacy devices? Again not vistas fault. I have so many people say that hate vista because of similar issues, when its not vistas fault, but there fault for upgrading when the advisor told them it was incompatible anyway. Sorry but its really bugging me to see people complain about stupid shit.

  24. mkesterco

    Colemanguy-

Your not sorry, and you missed my point.... I got Vista and didn't want it... so I gave it a try. And yes it is Vista's fault, I like a specific MICROSOFT Mouse and It doesn't work correctly - so I blame the manufacturer - who how on ???????rolleyes happens to be MICROSOFT. And their lack of specs bugs the hell out me.... I started with a great (Vista preloaded) laptop (1.6mhz 1gb 120gb) and pumped $1200-$1500 into upgrades to get everything up to livable Vista standards just to decide it still: doesn't WORK FOR ME! And my point... still...it is PRELOADED, what upgrade advisor?

But if you want to rail on a persons opinion when someone asked who tried it and what did they think.... try this opinion:

Vista's the operating code? Duo Core tech was around prior to basically (maybe concurrently) with the developement of Vista?

Why doesn't Vista demonstrate some ingenius way of splitting data or tasks and flooding both processors (or all four in some hardware cases)? I would be way impressed had this machine cranked thru the data (like the 3-d design work I do). However, instead one processor sits there relatively untapped.

Why have multiple processors if you can't really use them?? That would be the software (OS) fault? NO? WHICH HAPPENS TO BE VISTA - WHICH happens to been introduced after the market floods multi core tech.confused

    IMHO

At any rate, Vista runs like butter on my aging X2 4400+.

Maybe you should blame Toshiba for underpowering your rig with 1gb of ram from the store (1200-1500 in upgrades for ram?), and throwing garbage OEM software on the machine slowing it down and gobbling up resources.

    Buyer beware?

Incompatible software...well duh. Happens every OS release, despite if its Apple, Microsoft, or a flavor of Linux.

What lack of specs, mouse, laptop or OS??? If you had to pump more money into getting your preloaded Vista laptop upto a higher standard then that is either a wrong choice in laptop or the laptop manufacturers fault for not building a PC that will run Vista smoothly as standard.

Actually Vista as in just the OS and its internal applications handles SMP very very well ( all MS OSes that offer SMP NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista compatability ) indeed and if needed utilizes 2/4 cores, dependent on task and if it need the power, even auto defrag uses a small % of both cores on my Core2duo, this can be easily viewed in Task Manager > Processes or using Microsoft/Sysinternals Process Explorer.

The issue with dual cores and being used arrises from again, 3rd party applications that are not coded for SMP, some high end applications are multi core friendly as in the likes of Adobe Photoshop, but if 3rd party devs cannot be bothered to code their apps accordingly then its not the OSes fault, plus as Dual Core or Multi Core tech is in reletive terms new, software to take advantage of this hardware tends to really lag behind.

Sadly at present software devs are playing catch up with Vista in getting compatability with their software to run accordingly, again not a Vista issue if 3rd party devs cannot get their finger out, not as if Vista was released quickly or unknown to folk!

I very recently purchased a pc with Vista installed. I was skeptical, but so far really like Vista. I understand it's not a major change from XP, but do like the sleek look, the gadgets, and the much more intuitive search feature.

The only problem I've had, so far, is not being able to easily keep a program from starting up with Windows. Vista leads you to Windows Defender to disable programs from starting up, but the button to disable it is shaded out, so you can't use it. I'm not sure what the msconfig equivalent is in Vista and haven't gone to a lot of trouble to find out yet, as I found a workaround for the particular program I wanted to disable.

I knew enough not to expect the first version to be perfect, but don't have a tolerance for something that would be buggy enough to be a regular or major inconvenience. So far, I've been reasonably pleased.

Vista is a major change from XP, sadly many just focus on the look and GUI graphics to thing of the core changes.

Msconfig is still the same ( start > in Start Search box type msconfig ) but its not a startup manager and never has been its more a troubleshooting tool and while you may stop a few startups, msconfig actually adds one back!

Its better to use Windows Defender to stop a startup or actually delete it using a registry cleaner such as CCleaner.

Glad your reasonably pleased with it tho flankadank as I find it great and easily use it daily for any tasks I need, its really stable for me too, no bugs or issues that are major, couple of minor ones but I knew them from the beta test days, and many will be fixed in SP1 ( similar to XP and many other OSes )

DX10 is supposed to revolutionize graphics but I won't be able to use it for a while as the 8800 is way too expensive. That card costs what my system did.
