Socket 479 compatible even on laptops?

    So I have a laptop that's about 5-6 years old. Specifically it's a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1216

It's running terribly. Task manager tells me the CPU usage seems to be shooting up to 99% whenever the tiniest of things are done (ex. moving a window around, playing music). It has been reformatted and it still acts like this, even though there is literally nothing else running (acts the same in safe mode).

I figure I'll replace the CPU and the hard drive. The CPU specifically is a socket 479...

If I find a socket 479 CPU to buy, is it guaranteed to work on any motherboard (laptop or desktop or whatever) that has the same socket? Does anything else factor into the working-compatibility of a CPU in a motherboard?

Changing the CPU will not help, nor will changing the hard drive help either if it's still good. Some questions:

Does the hard drive go nuts when it's upto %99?
Did you test the drive with the free Toshiba diagnostics tool yet?

By "go nuts" I'm going to assume you mean "make noises," in which case it does not. The hard drive light seems to always be lit and indicates it's working hard. If I'm trying to play a video, I can notice that the hard drive light lights up in sync with the lag. The moment the video slows down I notice the light, and this happens in constant waves.

It did not occur to me to see if Toshiba has provided any diagnostic tools. Give me a moment to check that out.

Yes, I mean thrashing about which goes along with the hard drive light. You may have to have your ear closer to hear it.

I hear subtle noises, but since it's a mechanical device I figure this is normal.

I'm still looking for this diagnostics tool provided by Toshiba. I'll also look into just anything that might be able to check for bad sectors or whatever it could be.

If I do end up replacing the hard drive, I need a way to install windows. The problem is that my dvd drive is not working, either. I've heard of ways to install windows without using a disk... such as by USB? I've never booted by USB before, so I'm going to need some guidance for that.

If your laptop is 5-6 years old, your BIOS may not accept booting from USB. :cry

Search for Socket 479 on your favourite Search engine.

My note: Lots more info at the link above, and at Google.

Thank you bigbazza, sometimes I forget to do the most obvious things.

I am going to be making a separate thread for the booting from USB thing.
