socket connect error

I'm running xp pro with all available updates. the problem I have is when setting up an ftp server. no one outside my local network can connect to my server, all they get is 'socket connect error'. I'm using Guildftpd as ftp server but have also tried Serv-U, same thing there. I've tried setting this up at work as well (completely different network) and I get the same thing there.

I thought it to be some fault somewhere so I reinstalled the o/s. No change. (obviously ran windowsupdate.com first thing)

I can connect within the local network, so if I connect with for example Explorer, CuteFTP or FlashFXP *from* my computer *to* my computer it works, but as soon as it goes out on the internet it's blocket.

I use a router, so I thought it to be that, but if I connect my computer directly to the internet (which btw is cable broadband) it gives the same error. Still works internally but not from outside the house.

I can see ppl connecting to me, if I open the server. I see their hostnamn and ip as if they're already connected but it stays so for like 20 seconds then times out and disappears. All they got was 'socket connect error' and couldn't list any directorys.

I strongly belive it to be one or more of the windows updates because I had this working until somewhere around september - october last year then it suddenly wouldn't let me connect. I've tried to figure out what update came around then but it's so many...

Any ideas?
